The rosters of Confederate companies consisting mostly of men from Kaufman county (about 14 rosters altogether) at the Kaufman Co Texas GenWeb Project webpage have been updated. A few typographical errors have been corrected and several men have received their stars indicating that they were citizens of Kaufman co. Justin M. Sanders "I shot an arrow into the air. Gray and descendants, please contact me. S. M. Gray was in Kaufman County for several years on either side of 1900. I've not yet seen the 1900 census. S. M. Gray, and J. R. Gray were witnesses on the 1899 Confederate Pension Application of William W. Gray. The pension application states that William W. Gray was 69 in July 1899. This is younger than William W. Gray's age as listed on the 1850, 1860, & 1870 censuses, but does agree with the birth date of the William Gray who is buried in Wilson Chapel Cemetery along with Eliza Gray, S. M. Gray and others. So maybe there is a familial connection between S. M. Gray and William W. Gray. The cemetery listing for S. M. Gray on Rootsweb's Kaufman County site states s/he was born in 1844. S/he was buried next to Sallie H. Gray. I don't recognize S. M. Gray as any of the children who lived with William W. Gray during the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses. William W. Gray is missing after the 1870 c! ensus until his pension application in 1899. There was a child name William, age 9, living with William W. Gray during the 1850 Weakley Co., TN census. This child was not living with him on any subsequent census. Perhaps this is the tie between William W. Gray and S. M. Gray. If there was a familial tie. And if I've correctly identified the William W. Gray family in 1850.

Abby Balderama, the webmistress the Kaufman Co GenWeb Project page, has made several additions to the page recently-- check them out if you haven't been to the page lately. Among the new stuff are: 1. several new cemetery enumerations (Kemp City and Mt. Olive (Scurry) are big ones), 2. an 1892 business and farmers directory which can serve as a partial replacement for the 1890 Census-- about 2000 individuals are listed, 3. a list of black voters from the 1867 Voters registration list, and 4. a new African-American section. Well done Abby! Justin M. Sanders "I shot an arrow into the air. If you want to know where they are buried, this will be given on a death certificate. You don't always have to pay $9 for a copy either, if it was a long time ago you can ask for a photo copy for $1 at most courthouses. Just go to the courthouse that is in the county they died in and ask. Both birth and death certificates give the names of the parents, unless it is unknown. If you know the dates of death you can also go to the library and look at the microfilms of the local newspapers. There you may find your ancestors obits which give names and dates of family. Another thing you can do is to check the census records. The Kaufman Library has copies of early census such as 1920, 1910, 1900 and even earlier. This will give the name and age of each person and where they were born as well as where their parents were born. All the libraries I know of keep censu! s records in their libraries. Also, you have a computer which can be a great tool. You can go to www.ancestry.com and put in an ancestors name to search. You may find someone else has information listed on that person. This is a great way to learn about your family and to meet your fellow researcher/cousin. Also you can visit any counties genealogy website by going to www.rootsweb.com and adding to the end of that address the state and countie- example- for Kaufman County- www.rootsweb.com/~txkaufma or for Ellis County- www.rootsweb.com/~txellis. The countie sites can give you some info like cemetery listings and lots more. If you do not know the dates of your grandparents deaths just go to www.rootsweb.com and search their names. You will find a listing of death records for that date, but this info is only for certain years. Maybe you will find them there. Enjoy your hunt!

I'm from a strained family, where most of the siblings living today have not seen each other for 15-30 years. The information I've been given on my grand parents & great grandparents is vague & cryptic. I'd like any info you can give on how I can research the following leads: Grandfather: Willie James Leach Son of: Francis Washington Leach & Anna Hayes Grandmother: Ona Neva (McDonald) Leach Daughter of: Opie Reid McDonald & Viola (Caraway) McDonald (spellings may be incorrect) My grandmother worked for the STATE HOSPITAL. My grandfather worked for the RAILROAD. They had one STILLBORN child & one child that DIED between the ages of 5-9 years. Two or more of their surviving 4-5 children graduated from TERRELL HIGH SCHOOL. My grandmother is buried in a CEMETERY that is within 10 miles of TERRELL. Within the past 10 years, their old house was CONDEMMED & TORN DOWN by the city. Any information on how & where to start my research on the above clues would be endlessly appreciated!! Thank you in advance!
