Surnames: LAUDE, HORTON, GALE Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BkB.2ACE/916 Message Board Post: Horton Meyer Laude Horton Meyer Laude, a UC Davis professor emeritus of agronomy and range science, died Oct. 8, 2004, after a long illness. He was 89. He was born Feb.. 25, 1915, in Beaumont, Texas, the only child of Hilmer H. and Edna Horton Laude. He spent his childhood in Manhattan, Kan., and was a 1937 graduate of Kansas State University. From 1937 to 1939, he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He earned his doctorate in botany at the University of Chicago in 1941. In 1946, after serving in the U.S. Army, he married Jane Gale and joined the UCD faculty. His teaching and research career spanned 35 years. He retired in 1981 and was honored by his alma mater with the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award for that year. His widely published research included work on the physiology, ecology, adaptation and development of range plants and cereals. In 1964 he was a Rockefeller Foundation visiting professor in Chapingo, Mexico, and in 1968 he was a visiting fellow at Lincoln College in New Zealand. He was a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and had served as president of its western branch, as well as president of the Western Society of Crop Science. He belonged to several other professional and scientific societies, including Sigma Xi. He is survived by his wife Jane and daughter Jennifer, both of Davis, and his son Richard of Palo Alto. Private services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association or Yolo Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
