July 21, 1867 James Thomas GRAVES (b. c 1838 TN) Ruffun Turner emigrated to Texas in 1831 where on June 23, 1835 he recieves a land grant of 1 league in Jasper County. There is a Character Certificate in the General Land Office of Texas dated October 10th, 1834, District of Bevil (later Jasper County) stating that he had 4 children at the time. He and his family seem to have remained in Jasper County while his children were born. Ruffun shows up in 1838 on Returns from Jasper County Board of Land and in the 1850 Census with all of his children except Nancy Emily, who had not been born at the time of the census. Sometime between 1850 and 1860, the Turners removed to California where they appear in Tulare County, CA. Aaron, Jane and Thomas are no longer living in Ruffun & Sarah's household. Nancy's death certificate lists the family coming to CA in 1855 and has her mother's maiden name as CONN, however there is quite a bit of incorrect information on this certificate, so this information is suspect (a non-relative gave the information). Her brother's Sashwell and David's death certificates give their mother as Sara BEATY.
