Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AkB.2ACE/349.1 Message Board Post: Frances, I am having the same problem. I am the grandson of John Q. Smith and Mallie Rachel Gandy and, while the Gandy line is pretty well researched, the Smiths are perplexing. Apparently there is a John Q and Thad E Smith listed in the same household on a Jasper County census; however, their parents' birth states are different. John Q. Smith was married twice, and Mallie is his second wife. John and Mallie married in 1901 or 1902, and their land straddles both Jasper and Newton counties. I believe John Q. was born December 12, 1865, and Mallie and Sallie were born January 29, 1888. Sallie Gandy is her twin sister. Arrie is a sister. Other Gandy siblings are R. J. (Uncle Dick), Travis, Alpha Bell, and Ina ("Teck"). I'm not sure about Daniel Herbert Smith, Sr. He was quite a character. Our family visited him on several occasions after he and Sallie divorced. His new wife was much younger, and her name was Nettie. They had a son named Johnny Ray Smith when Daniel! was in his sixties. Daniel is either a brother or cousin of John Q. and Thad. If he is a brother, he was clearly much younger. Daniel and Sallie's children include Daniel Herbert, Jr., and Callie Smith Biscamp. My mother said more than once that her father (John Q.) always said he was from the "forks of the river." That would have been the Neches River, but not much help in census searching. I am continuing to search. Please let me know if you find anything. paul williamson
