I just returned from a brief visit to Jasper county as we have multiple lines there in the 1850s-1870s. I found a book there I would highly recommend to anyone researching multiple lines in Jasper County (or for people interested in the 'story' of lives as well as the dates). It was not one that I would have normally looked at, but a kind lady at the Historical Commission's library had me look up my names there. The other publications there were equally as valuable, but this one surprised me. If you visit there, don't overlook it! The book is "Jasper County Commissioners Court Minutes, Vol. A, 1853-1866" abstracted by Dianne Pace. I obtained my copy from the Jasper County Historical Commission. First, it gave me an excellent view of what was going on in the County. The society and cohesion of Jasper (and perhaps most early counties) was based on the county, not the city or neighborhood as it is today (keep in mind, there were less than 1000 people in all of Jasper county for a long time). Second, listed the widows and wives of Civil War soldiers from Jasper county, and some of the help they received. Third, there is also a summary map showing some of the homesites of early settlers (especially the ones used as markers in things), and a site map of Jasper, the city. Fourth, it briefly touched on the things that impacted the county as the Civil War ends. Fifth, there is some info about who was receiving schooling and where. Sixth, there is some interesting info about a couple of 'suspicious' deaths and some info about incarcerations. A person who was in irons one week may be a lead for some county project the next week. Seventh, when notices needed to be pos! ted, it named the newspaper that was used in the area. It ended up being a excellent source to create a timeline for my ancestors, and what was happening around them. It is definitely not the ONLY source to use, but don't overlook it if your ancestors were in Jasper from 1850-1865.

Holt on the 31st of January 1841. The return address appears to be Toro LA. There is a picture of W.C. Southwell along with other 1890 Baptist preachers at the First Baptist Church in Jasper. I have found Wilson and Evalina in the 1870 and 1880 Newton County Texas census and the 1850 Sabine Parish LA census. The information regarding Evalina would put her birth around 1816 in Mississippi. Wilson was a Baptist missionary preacher. He is the son of J. L. Southwell. He died Jul 1 1900 and is buried at Zion Hill, LA. I believe Evaline is buried at Pleasant Hill, LA. Any information you can supply would be appreciated. Thanks, Cindy [email protected]

Hi Michael, Would you mind looking up and see if you can find an obit for: Harriet (Wood[s]) Jackson. May be listed as only Harriet Jackson. I believe she was in the Beaumont area when she died. Very possible also that she was in the Jasper County area. She is buried in Evadale, I am told. She died between 1947 - 1948. I looked it up again last night just to be sure and that is when my mother says she died. She died just before I was born, and not long after my parents were married. My mother didn't know her very long when she died. She is my great grandmother. Michael, I have a copy of the funeral home record and a photo of the headstone of my gg-grandfather who is buried in the Kirbyville Cemetery. His name was Jonothan T. Taylor and he died December 13,1935 in Evadale. His wife's name was Marthie V. (Victoria ?) and she died January 15, 1905 and is also buried in the Kirbyville Cemetery. I have no other info on her. If there is an obit for either I will be more than happy to send the $5.00 each. Do I send it now, or if and when you find anything. Thanks, Theresa Parker Bellville, TX
