Lasher, D.D., Editor of the Journal and Messenger, Cincinnati, Ohio. It was published by the Press of the Oxford News Co., Oxford, ohio, copyrighted 1899. Your Samuel does not appear in this directory, nor does my great-great-grandfather, who died in 1895. However, my great-grandfather, another Baptist minister, died in 1910 and does appear in the directory. I am under the impression that pretty much all baptist ministers who were living during the year 1899 appear in the directory, including baptist ministers in Texas, and especially ministers who helped form churches, but if they died before that year, they are omitted. If that is the case, then Samuel Clark most likely died before 1899. In the preface of this ministerial directory is the following: "This Directory can not take the place of The American Baptist Year Book. It seeks to do what the Year-Book can not do. That publication contains the names, and the names only, of twenty-eight thousand, four hundred and nine ordained Baptist ministers, with their latest known postoffice addresses. But a name is no index of character or of work. Those who study the affairs of the denomination and wish to know something of the men who are doing the work must seek information in some other direction." I was lucky to find this book to finally have a thorough list of all the churches that my great-grandfather served at, as well as his addresses, colleges he attended, places of ordination, and years (even months) of all his events - pretty much his entire resume, up until the year 1899 - information we did not have before this past Christmas when this book was found in a small town bookstore. Most likely this is the earliest (or only?) publication of this directory, but it does indicate that "yearbooks" had been published in years before 1899, so if we can locate these yearbooks, they may contain a few other clues, such as the year your Samuel Clark died, as well as addresses. So, one possible source is to search for the American Baptist Year Book. Good luck, and if you find any of these please let me know (and if I find them I will do the same). -Tim Stamps
