Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HlB.2ACI/2334.1 Message Board Post: Rocky Mountain in Jack County could be a number of places if you have ever been to Jack County. Can you tell me the reason for your reference to Rocky Mountain? If I knew a surname for your search, it would be easier to pinpoint the destination of your search. There is a possibility that your search may actually be in a county that borders Jack County since there are "Rocky Creek" designations and "Rocky Mountain" locations in other counties bordering Jack County. From experience in Jack County, when a family locates in a census, they may have a house in that county or a farm - but that may not be their point of location.

    2. Hi Everyone, I have a suggestion. How about letting the list admin, Dorman, and I do some thinking and visiting about all this. Bet we can come up with something....<g>. In the mean time we probably need to get the list back to genealogy. Anyone want to say something about your biggest brick wall in Jack Co. Perhaps someone can help. Since both my father's and mother's lines came through Jack Co., I have several brick walls there. But, will start with this one..... Samuel Clark - b. abt 1814 in Ohio. I still have not been able to locate his d. date and all I know is that he is supposed to have been buried in Jack Co.. He is in the 1880 census of Jack Co., living with the O. M. Melton family. That census is dated JUNE 17, 1880. Then I have a letter written by him dated Aug. 17, 1880. That is the last info. I have on him. Samuel was a Baptist minister and helped form churches in Jack, Parker, and other North Texas counties. Anyone know where Samuel might be and when he died????? Thanks and take care - Emma

    2. Would the person or people who e mailed Dorman privately concerning his postings of very, very important information for the Jack Co. history, please come forward and post your concerns to ALL of us? Maybe if you speak your concerns for all of us to see, we can somehow convince you that what Dorman is doing is beyond what any of us would do or have ever done to help preserve the history of Jack Co. We can maybe also as a group, help you find a better way to handle your concerns, such as helping you subscribe to the digest mode, etc. I really don't think Dorman is going to be convinced to start his lifelong work up again unless the people who e mailed him privately come forward and help convince him that he is GREATLY needed! If he quit all of his work forever, wouldn't you feel really bad that he quit because of your comments? Julie Coley - Wichita Co. volunteer

    1. Re: [TXJack] Jack County Newspaper Abstracts
    2. Hello Betty, Of course, you are correct. The purpose of both the board and the list is the free exchange of information. Dorman's postings are absolutely wonderful and of tremendous benefit to folks now and in the future. The problem is that some folks have been sending messages to Dorman privately complaining about his postings. That has made him uncomfortable and rightly so. Thus he indicated that he was going to cease working on Jack County information for a while. If closing the gateway would make things easier for him then that would seem to be one solution. And..... I would prefer to have him posting "somewhere" rather than cease totally which is what he indicated he was going to do. Or... in other words, Dorman with the gateway closed is better than no Dorman at all....<g>. And now.... if you don't mind, just a bit of information about mail lists and boards. And... PLEASE REMEMBER - I am the admin for the Jack Co. message board but not the Jack Co., mail list. I do admin other mail lists and the information below is what I sent to those mail lists a couple of months ago. MAIL LISTS: The fact that you can receive this message means that you have chosen to subscribe to the Jack. Co. mail list. To post to the list you must be a subscriber. Any message you send is automatically sent to every subscriber on the list and in turn, you will receive any message sent to the list by any other subscriber. The messages are sent in two ways. Regular subscription which means that you get each message immediately as it is posted. Digest version which means that the messages are batched and sent out periodically. So if receiving every message is a bit much you might want to try the digest version. RootsWeb has just under 30,000 different mail lists for states, counties, regions, surnames, special topics, etc. So you have a lot to choose from....<g>. If you are interested in finding out other rootsweb mail lists that might be of interest then go to this URL. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ If you are interested in finding out what lists you subscribe to you can check your subscriptions by going to password central and asking for that list. The URL is: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ All messages sent to the mail lists are archived. You can look at these archives in two ways. If you think you have missed some postings to any of the mail lists or if you just need to review past postings then check the archives for that mail list. Go to this URL and enter the name of the mail list. You can then look at the messages to the list by month. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Access to this site is not restricted to subscribers. This means you can check the archives for other lists as well. You can also search past messages for any mail list by going to this URL: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl First enter the name of the list you want to search. You will then get a screen and can search the messages by year. AND... finally.... if you have any questions concerning any mail list you might be on you can contact the list admin by sending a message to: listname-admin@rootsweb.com Replace the word - listname - with the name of the specific mail list. For example: TxJack-admin@rootsweb.com The message will be forwarded to that admin. MESSAGE BOARDS Message boards differ from mail lists in that you do not have to be a subscriber to that specific board. Nor are new postings automatically sent to your e-mail address. To read any new postings to the message board you must go to that message board site. You must also go to the board site to respond to any posting. Postings are retained for years and can be searched in various ways. You can access the message boards from the main RootsWeb page. www.rootsweb.com Scroll down to the message board section. You can also access the same boards from the ancestry.com main page. www.ancestry.com Click on the message board tab at the top. You do not have to be a subscriber to ancestry.com to access the message boards. Once there you can search for a specific board. Make sure you take time to read the Message Board Rules and Message Board FAQ. Links to these are at the bottom of the page. Both provide helpful information in use of the message boards. Both mail lists and message boards have admins. In many cases the same admin has both the list and the board. In other cases, there are two different admins. I have already explained how to send a message any mail list admin. In the case of message boards go to any page on that board. Click on the List and Announcements link. There you will find the name and e-mail address of that board admin. LINK BETWEEN MESSAGE BOARDS AND MAIL LISTS: Some message boards are linked to their corresponding mail lists via a gateway. (Note: Not all mail lists have a corresponding board) In that case, any posting on the message board is automatically sent to the mail list and received by all subscribers. There are advantages and disadvantages to gatewaying and I won't go into that now but watch your mail list messages for the notation that the message has been forwarded from the board. To respond to that message, you must go to the URL listed in that message. A response sent back to the mail list will not reach the original poster. Note that the gateway does not go both ways. Messages posted on the board are sent to the mail list messages posted on the mail list are NOT sent to the board. Hope all this helps. If you have any questions give me a yell. Take care - Emma

    3. Hello Emma, Please correct me if I am mistaken, but I'm under the impression that the purpose of this list is the free exchange of genealogical information. And, Dorman's posting fall in that catagory. If you close the gateway to them, won't you be defeating the purpose of the list for all of us? The people who are complaining can always unsubscribe and eliminate the problem they see with the postings. But, if the gateway is closed to Dorman's extractions: 1. the rest of us won't get them. 2. they will not be searchable at rootsweb for future research. 3. a few people will defeat the purpose of the list. Please consider these things before making your decision. Thank you, Betty Hollie Henderson, TX

Surnames: Stamps Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HlB.2ACI/2330.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Dorman Holub, Thank you very much for this information! It is most helpful, and my family will be most grateful. Thank you also for transcribing and loading the annoucements from the Jacksboro paper. Please don't worry about whether or not it is appreciated - it most certainly is, and over time more will appreciate your work, as people will find the announcements when they are ready to search for their family roots. Around the 1950s or 1960s, my grandfather, Frank Harper Stamps, wrote the following: During my childhood and youth, I had a very strange complex. I was obsessed with the fear that I was an orphan and that I had been left on the door step of my supposed parents’ home one cold and snowy night. This fear always made me shiver, as I visualized a tiny baby left out in the cold. There seemed to be a great difference between myself and the rest of the family. My father was highly educated, having graduated from the university and the seminary. He was versed in six languages and had earned thirteen diplomas. He was teaching Greek and Hebrew in a Texas college at the time of my birth. I almost worshiped my two brothers, who were so much smarter than I. I thought they were so handsome, while I was so dull and anything but good looking. My mother was the wisest and sweetest thing in the world, and I looked up to my three sisters as if they were angels from Heaven. All of these fancies were so real to me and so exaggerated in my mind that perhaps they were responsible for my complex and fears. One day I tearfully unburdened my heart to my mother, telling her all of my fears. I said, “Mother, did you find me on your door step when I was a baby, or is it true that you are my real mother?” She was greatly surprised and hastened to assure me that my fears were groundless. However, my fears persisted, until one day fate stepped in and tore away all doubts and fears. It happened this way. I was conducting the singing for an evangelist in Seymour, Texas, and we were invited to conduct chapel services at the high school. At the close of the services, one of the teachers approached me and said, “Do you happen to be the son of Reverend J. J. Stamps who used to live in Jacksboro, Texas?” “Yes, that is correct,” I said. She said among other things, “I am the wife of Dr. Pistole, who owns a drugstore in Seymour, and I am sure my husband will be glad to see you, for we were friends of your family when you lived in Jacksboro.” I hastened down town to the City Drug Company and found the doctor and introduced myself to him. He was delighted to see me, and inquired all about the family. Then he said this. “Frank, I want to tell you something that will interest you greatly. I was a friend and neighbor of your family when you were born, and I am the very doctor that brought you into the world.” The doctor did not understand the full meaning of the tears of gratitude that welled up and overflowed as I realized the impact of what he was saying. The great burden of my life had been lifted and my fear had been conquered. Frank H. Stamps 3316 Macon Road Memphis, TN
