Marsee died at his home 7 November 1919. He was buried at Oakwood cemetery, Rev. J.A. Matthews officiating. The Jacksboro Gazette Thursday, November 27, 1919 William Riley Marsee was born in Knox County, Kentucky, 1844, died 7 November 1919, aged 75 years, 4 months and 3 days; came to Denton County, Texas in 1875; from there to Wise County; then to Jack County in 1896, where he resided in and near the vicinity of Jacksboro ever since. He at the age of 19, enlisted in the Union army, served as Corporal in Co. A, 49th Regiment. He was a faithful and true soldier. His next enlistment was in 1884 at Paradise – he entered in Christ’s cause, joined the Missionary Baptist Church of which he was a member until his death. He was married in 1870 to Sarah Black, who survives him, with only one living daughter, 3 brothers – Ben and Tom, living here, John in Kansas, one sister and host of friends. He was noted for his honesty, industry and jovial disposition. His home was the home for the homeless, his heart reached out for the friendless. The funeral was held by Bro. Matthews.

Mr. Garner has been ill for several months, having contracted the disease which caused his death while in the army. His parents, Mr. And Mrs. A.J. Garner, who had been called to San Antonio on account of his illness, had the remains of their son brought to Jacksboro, his old home, for interment. Funeral took place at the Methodist church. Dr. John R. Allen, pastor officiated assisted by Rev. J.A. Matthews. Dr. Allen, in his sermon, paid a fitting tribute to the worth of the young man who had been summoned to answer the last roll call. Mr. Garner had not resided in Jacksboro since the war as he went into business at Sharon, Oklahoma, after he received his discharge from the army and remained there until he was taken ill, when he was taken to San Antonio, his relatives and friends hoping that he might be restored to health. Pallbearers were selected from former soldiers who served in the war. Mr. Garner leaves his wife and baby, his parents, brothers and sisters. All the brothers and sisters were present except Newton, who is with the American Army in Germany. Dr. F.E. Garner of Dalhart, Mr. And Mrs. Daniel Garner of Sharon, Oklahoma; Mr. And Mrs. Wiley Lamm of Dalhart, Mrs. Tom Carpenter of Detroit, Michigan, George Garner, also his cousin, Mrs. F.N. McClure of Wichita Falls, Mrs. Garner’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. Stephens of Sharon, Oklahoma. Mr. Garner grew to manhood in Jacksboro.

Mr. Jenkins was the second son of Mr. And Mrs. G.M. Jinkins [sic], both well known in Jacksboro. He had returned home from overseas when he was in service, during the war, belonging to the mechanical aviation corps.

The Gazette will continue business under the same firm name of J.N. Rogers & Company Alice M. Rogers Joanna L. Rogers Business office on northeast corner of Public Square, Jacksboro, Texas. [The Rural Citizen was a rural newspaper that was brought to Jacksboro and eventually became the Jacksboro Gazette in 1880. The Jacksboro News began publishing in 1895 and consolidated with the Jacksboro Gazette on 1 October 1919. There are only a handful of known issues of the Jacksboro News in existence and only one issue known to be microfilmed.]
