    1. [TXJACK] ANDERSON (NS Canada to Texas to NS Canada)
    2. Patrick Hagan
    3. Here is a real puzzle in late 1800s cross border migration. My GGrandfather, James A. Anderson (#1 below) was born in Nova Scotia Canada. Early in life he got wanderlust, travelled throughout NE and Eastern United States, and eventually ended up in Texas. There he married Lilla R. Cutter and the first 2 (John and Oscar Manning) of 6 children were born. Oscar Manning (#3 below) was born in Miami, Texas. The next youngest, Orlo Nyman (#4 below) was born in Nova Scotia Canada. So the family moved from Texas back to NS sometime between 11-Nov-1889 and 14-Sep-1890. I am posting this to ROBERTS, CLAY and JACK county lists because of the following: 1. Miami Texas, where Oscar Manning Anderson was born, is in ROBERTS county. 2. The following is a portion of a letter written by James A. Anderson, in 1877 and posted from Stampede Springs in CLAY County: "Stampede Springs Clay County Texas 1877 Dear Parents I have bought myself a place and hope that my investments may prove successful. I am much pleased with the country the lands are very productive and the sun very hot. The emigration into this country surpasses anything I ever saw. I have bought myself a place part bottom land and part timber which cost me about 300.00. Now the next thing that is wanted is an housekeeper which I shall soon look after when I get your consent. Now in regards to society I am much pleased with these people. I left a God fearing and a God worshipping people and have settled among some of the same good old Baptist. Father, last night I was at prayer meeting, afternoon, Sunday school, morning, preaching. Give me a comfortable home and Christ to enjoy in my heart and I care not for riches. Now father although I have purchased lands here don't fail to let me know if I am needed at home because I would not have you suffer while I am able to work. Father you will understand that I do not expect to make much money. I have a comfortable home and to enjoy good society is my object." 3. In a letter written by James A. Anderson, in July 1879 and posted from JACK County, he speaks of having married. 4. I have another letter posted from Adobe Walls, Hutcheson City, dated Nov. 11, 1889. I believe this is in ROBERTS County. Part of the letter reads: " We have moved since I last heard from you. We were surveyed (?) out of our land and we moved on a new place. I managed to convert my place in Jack Co. into cattle." And here is a 2 generation report listing my GGrandfather. James A. Anderson and his 6 children. #3, Oscar Manning Anderson is my Grandfather. Would someone please go to the court house and actually look on the death Certificates and see by chance if Robert Lee Gardner happens to have a Death Certificate in Jack Co. He died in 1920. I know there is no marker for his grave, but just maybe a death certificate. I live 5 hours away. Also please check and see if the old funeral home records exist. Maybe it might be there. Thanks for your trouble. I really appreciate it. Sue Hickman

    3. Posted on: Jack County Biographies Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Tx/JackBios/2 Surname: Newman, Crawford, Hannah, Howell, Clark, Cook, Green, Melton, Wilton, Shelton, Stewart ------------------------- SAMUEL NEWMAN Sr was born 1830-37 in New York, and died 4 February 1925 in Newcastle, Young Co., TX. His parents names are Unknown, on 1880 census for Navarro Co., TX, it states his Father was born in England and Mother in Ireland He married (#1) (POSSIBLY) SARAH ANN CRAWFORD 13 November 1865 in Angelina Co., TX, daughter of UNKNOWN. She may have been born Bet. 1845-1850 in Arkansas, and died Abt. 1875 in Texas. He married (#2) MARY MOLLIE HANNAH Bet. 1875 - 1880 in Navarro Co., TX., daughter of JAMES HANNAH and UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1855 in Henderson Co., Texas, and died 30 June 1933 in Jacksboro, Jack Co., TX. There are no family stories about or momentos from our Great Grandfather Samuel Newman Sr, that may be due to the date of his death (1925), when my Father was only 18 and his parents had moved to Oklahoma, between 1915-20 and GGrandpa Newman stayed in Jack County. To the best of my knowledge, Sam Sr. was a farmer-rancher from the time he arrived in Texas, shortly after he was paroled from the Civil War as a Confederate Soldier. If his birth date is correct he lived to be 95 years old, quite a fete under the best of circumstances. I know that he moved his family to Jack County sometime in the 1890’s, from Navarro County where he had lived for many years and many of his children were born. >From the Texas State Archives, copy of application for Confederate Soldier Pension #34180; Filed 15 May 1917, approved 1 June 1917: for "Sam Newman, of Loving, Young Co., TX, age 87 years, born in New York". Other information; he had lived in Loving, Young Co., TX for one year, was a farmer, assessed value of his property $800.00 and in poor health, at the time of application. Statement from the "War Department, The ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, WASHINGTON; May 18, 1917: Respectfully returned to Commissioner of Pensions, State of Texas, Austin, with the information that: Samuel Newman, enlisted in Adair Co., MO, "First enlisted in Green's State Troops, wounded and captured August 1862, later was a [Pvt.] Company "D" 9th Battl'n., MO. S.S. C.S.A. He appears on a register of C.S.A. at the General Hospital in Shreveport, LA was admitted April 18, 1865. The application for pension, gives additional information about name of Unit he was with includes; Co., D Ninth [9th] Missouri; Parsons Brigade, Pendal's Battalion". Application Witnessed by: W.C. Groner, and J.L. McCord, signed 10 May 1917. Information about his time in service is very sketchy, record search from National Archives in Washington, DC provided no additional information. Application for MORTUARY WARRANT; signed by "Mary (Molly) Newman" his wife, states the he died at his home on the 5th day of February 1925, in the town of Newcastle, Young Co., TX. Certificate of Undertaker signed by; "W.H. Dover" and Attending Physician Certificate signed by; " C.J. Ponis[ spelling?] " giving cause of death to be "Senility". Both Undertaker and Physician were in Newcastle, Young Co., TX. Death Certificate lists name of parents as (Unknown), and date of death 4 February 1925. The date of death recorded on headstone is 1926, Winn Hill Cemetery, Jack Co., TX, (appears to be an error). He is buried in Winn Hill Cemetery, Jack Co., TX. Jacob and Susannah had a son named Jacob also, who was born either in 1859 or 1860. I am having a hard time tracing Jacob's roots. Family says he was from VT and on one census I have actually seen, it looks like NJ or NY. Also the age isn't written very well, could be 50 or 60, this is in the 1850 census for IL, where Jacob was before he moved to TX. If anyone is able to look up the 1860 Jack County census, I would be most appreciative. Any help offered would be excellent! Thank you, Holly : )

My grt grandfather, Levi Brawley supposedly went out for a bucket of water and was never seen again. Prob. was abducted or killed by Indians, I don't know, but he was married to Elizabeth Bunch Brawley and they had two children born there in 1862 and 1865. Their names were Mary Jane and John A. Brawley. They are on the 1870 and 1880 Jack County census and I was so fortunate to pick up Elizabeth and Levi Brawley's original marriage certificate of 1861 but I can't find anymore info on Levi and would love to know how I can find out about any Indian problems that might include something about him. I would also like some information on one of the Bunch relatives who filed a claim with the Gov. because of losses in an Indian raid there. My grt granmother, Mary Jane Brawley told stories of being in an Indian raid there prob. in the 1860's or 70's. I would love to have any History books on Jack County from that time period if there is such a thing. Any help on how to find info on any of these things would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Carolyn Coughlin P.S. I wonder if Jack County would have birth certificates for people born in 1862 and 1865? Thanks for reading. :)
