Looking for Levi, who was one of the first settlers of the Gibtown area. He and his brother, Samuel "Sammy" Cox were listed in the History of Jack County, as such. Samuel W. Cox and his wife Mary are buried in the gibtown cemetery. So is Louisa Cox, Levi's wife. But cannot find him. I even wrote to Austin in hopes they had him buried in another place, but they didn't even have him listed, anywhere. He first came to Jack County in 1876,He,his wife Louisa, Sammy, Mary and their three children, Nathan, Joseph, Lucinda (her husband Sam Ewing) all in a wagon train, and living there all his life. Raised two children of his own there. Albert S.Cox, his son was postmaster there in 1894. Rhoda C.Cox Thomasson, his daughter had four children born there. Delia M.,1890, Katie L., 1892, Joseph S.,1894, Elley M.,1896. He raised these four grandchildren, after their mother left, and their father died. They were listed on the census in his household in 1900. His wife died in 1908, and in 1910 he is listed in the household of James R. Cox, there in Jack Co.He is 71 years old. THAT IS THE LAST I HAVE FOUND OF HIM. If anyone knows anything of any one of these persons, or their descendants, please contact me. This is not just a brick wall, its a brick mountain. Thanks for your time, and any help you might offer. Wanda in Oklahoma

After he was killed in a fenceline dispute and his wife, Sarah Sally SMITH (b c1860 TX, d c1888) died, Sarah's brother took over Alexander's land. We think this brother was William A. SMITH (b1858 TX, d1946 OK) are found on the 1900 Jack Co. census As I am pretty new researching in Jack Co., are there any newspapers from this era exisiting?
I too would like to know about newspaper availability for articles such as this one. Information taken from "The History of Jack County Texas", by Jack County Genealogical Society, 1986; Article by Howard L and Ola Mae Nunley. " Benjamin Franklin Goodson Jr., was shot in the face with a shot gun, died instantly, on the morning 17 January 1922, buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Jack Co.,TX". If there is anyone out there that knows more about this I would really like to hear from you. Thanks so much, Elnora Frances Cook-Wyrick

Hello Beverly, I don't know where the Morrow cemetery is, but I know there are several Morrows buried at the Wizard Wells Cemetery in Jack County and it is little more that a stones throw from Wise County. My husband's great-aunt was married to a Morrow. I have photos of many of the Morrow graves. Perhaps I can help you if you are looking for someone specific, that is if they had a headstone. Just let me know. Diana Ware

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows any history about Armstrong mountain located in the southeast part of the county off hwy 2210. The Topo maps have it listed as Armstrong mountain. But thats all it says. I understand that the Butterfield Overland route ran right beside it coming from Decatuer to Joplin. You can still see the old roadbed. I also have been told that folks in Jacksboro in olden days liked to avoid going to close to it. They were worried about the indians. I now own it and was just wondering if anyone knew anymore about its history. Thank you. David

These re-affirm their resolutions of 25th Dec., that all Indians found off the Reserve would be killed, and they endorse the actions of the Rangers in killing the above Indian. The following will indicate their future action: "7th: That if the U.S. officers had manifested half the interest, promptness and energy, in pursuing the Indian perpetrators of the various murders and outrages, which have been committed on our citizens, that they have in this instance, our difficulties would long since have ceased. "8th. That we proceed to arrange all our available men into Minute Companies to be ready at all times to take their assigned places whenever the necessity may arrive. "9th. That we call on our sister counties to give us immediate assistance by organizing companies and marching to our immediate relief. "10th. That Capt. H.A. HAMNER be appointed to the command of the forces of Jack county. Each and every resolution unanimously adopted. "J.R. WORRALL, Chmn." The following is the letter of the Captain of the Ranger Company which killed the Indian Jacksboro, May 8th, 1859 Dear Union: — Our Rangers killed an Indian yesterday in this county at 1 o'clock P.M. The proof is positive that he belonged to the Lower Reserve; at 8 o'clock P.M. (a said to be) Dep. United States Marshal, at the head of 20 soldiers and 90 Indians made a demand of the citizens of this town to surrender the Rangers. The citizens replied they were not here. They then left swearing they would have them. Today the county met en masse, adopting resolutions — a copy I here transmit. Nearly ever man in the county was here — by far the greatest turn out ever witnessed in this county. Among the letters I send you taken from the Indians, was the scalp of a white child We want help immediately, from the frontier counties; can we get it? I think so, there are over 80 men under arms here and will remain under arms till our sister counties respond. I have sent expresses to several counties — I am sure we will make no flash this time. Respectfully, H.A. HAMNER
