Mary Ann's daughter, Luna Belle, married my great-grandfather - Rice Prettyman Knowles of Hunt Co. I have lots of information on the Knowles family. I didn't look like your family meshes with mine - at least I don't have enough information to form a link, although, family lore has it that Luna Belle was part Indian. That goes with your information, but I can't link it together.

Sometime after birth he migrated (either alone or with family, I do not know) and is next found in AR 1850 census(Calhoun Co.), He marries Sarah Elizabeth Warren in 1853 and raised several children. At some point after , I think, 1885/6 he moves to Choctaw Nation and is on the 1900 census. He must have come through Greenville, as one of his sons, Joel W. Smith shows to have married an Exer Stevenson in Shady Grove, Hunt Co., TX. Joel and Exer are also found on the 1900 Choctaw Nation census. Sometime later, Joel and his family move back to Greenville and lived in and around that area until their deaths. Do you have a Dorey J. or J. Dorey Smith, (son) of JOel and Exer in your history? I had already read that, but it does not tell me if the town or community is still there in 2007, nor does it say when the school closed, or if there are any stores left if the community is still there. Dotson, on Farm Road 1971 some fourteen miles southwest of Carthage in southwestern Panola County, is in a cotton and lumber producing area that was settled before the Civil War.qv A post office operated at the community from 1915 to 1921. In the mid-1930s Dotson had nine businesses, a school, a church, a number of houses, and an estimated population of twenty. Its reported population increased to fifty in the 1940s. After World War IIqv the town declined, and by the early 1970s only a store and a few houses remained in the area. Kelly, I noticed your last name: Culpepper. Where did your Culpeppers come from? My great great great grandmother was supposed to have been Sarah Culpepper from South Carolina, but years of searching by many people have not turned up any information on her. Does anyone know anything about the little town of Dotson, Texas? I think it was in Panola County. I would be interested in knowing if it is still there, and something about when the school closed. Charity was like a hundred (all right I inflate the number but not by much) small one or two room country schools that grew up around rural communities. I once saw a note that Hunt county had the most small country schools of any county in Texas. All these schools were within a short walking distance of all those kids that could only walk to school. I live about 2 blocks from Charity Road in Commerce which goes by the place where the old school house used to be. There is a cistern that still sits where the old cistern was to the old school house. My parents attended two of the old schools; Malloy and Cross Timbers. One of my parents friends taught at Mud Dig and SweatBox and I had an Uncle that taught at one of two of the others. Some of the old schools stood until the 1950's and later but I don't know of any that still stand. Anyway ask me what time it is and I will sometimes tell you how to make a watch. You are getting information about two separate places. There most certainly was a Shady Grove in Hunt County. I'm not sure if it was ever considered a town or just a community, but I have been there many times. It was just south of where highway 50 and Interstate 30 meet. I grew up in Scatterbranch which is between Commerce and Greenville. Honey Grove is a completely different place. It is east of Bonham. Hope this helps. Sue Lynn
