Celebrations are no longer held there - I was saying that I knew that in 1948 celebrations were still held there. I know nothing about what is going on today at Rehobath. My family homesteaded in Hunt Co in the 1860's and until my generation lived in and around Wolfe City. My grandfather - Roamey Williams - was a prolific writer. I have hundreds of letters he wrote starting in 1924 until he died in 1963. In these letters he details daily life in the area and mentions hundreds of local names. When the conversation here started about Rehobeth, I checked his writings to see if had anything to say. Here is what I found: April 30, 1943 - "I will be busy Sunday PM taking a piano to Rehobath." Note: It seems he loaned Rehobath a piano now and then when they needed one for a service. March 22, 1944 - "I sold a nice monument recently to be installed at Rehobath for Mother Gillespie. I have no pianos to loan them there this year." April 25, 1948 - "Next Sunday is Memorial Day at Rehobath and the next at Mt Carmel, we are especially interested in the one at Mt Carmel. Will Turner is not expected to live, he is one of the trustees (for Mt Carmel) and Mr Bush and others want me to take his place in the organization at the cemetery." That's all I have about Rehobath. Mt Carmel has a trust that keeps it maintained. It is beautiful and very well cared for to this day. Also, for anyone interested... Mt Carmel still has a memorial service every Mother's Day. Reb, it is ashame it has gone to ruin. I beleive Rehobeth was one of the first settlers communities in Texas. Folks drove wagon trains and traveled by river boat to that region before the Native American 'fights' had ended, built log cabins, etc. I know my great grand uncle and some of his companions settled there after the Civil War and raised their families. An entire community is buried there - from an epidemic of thyphoid in the late 1800's and later on. I am with you and hope someone cares enough to take care of the land and grave sites. reb948@aol.com wrote: I've been to the old Rehobeth Cemetery and it was a crying shame. Someone had gone in and tipped over tombstones and the place was in dire need of clearup and cutting. I vaguely remember that someone mentioned that a plan was in place to clean it up - sure hope so. Also I have heard somewhere that the cemetery itself could be described as being in Fannin County. I do know that it is very close to the county line between Wolfe City and Ladonia. You have to go down a dirt road to get to it so somewhere it might fall across the county line - no matter - as usually it is described as being in Hunt County. -----Original Message----- From: Debra LaMel To: txhunt@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 13 Jun 2007 12:06 am Subject: Re: [TXHUNT] Reply Request - Marriage records Jayne orry I had never heard of Rehobeth in Hunt and looked in up in the Texas andbook on line Thanks to Shirley for correcting me or you had been looking in Panola co for hem To err is human! ebra -----Original Message----- rom: txhunt-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:txhunt-bounces@rootsweb.com] On ehalf Of Jayne Weichert ent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 5:49 PM o: txhunt@rootsweb.com ubject: [TXHUNT] Reply Request - Marriage records Thanks . ! The first settlers arrived in the area that is now Hunt County around 1840. These early settlers found tribes of Kiowa, Caddo and Tawakoni Indians settled amidst the tall native prairie grass and large thickets. Approximately 500 people lived in the county when it was formed from Fannin and Nacogodoches Counties by the first legislature of Texas in 1846. The official act to create Hunt County was signed on April 11, 1846. Hunt County's early settlers came mostly from Tennessee and states in the deep south such as Alabama , Georgia and Mississippi . Mercer became interested in Texas colonization. Then, in 1841, on one of his seven trips to Texas, he began exploring the possibility of bringing Anglo-American settlers to the new republic. January 29, 1844, Mercer received an empresario contract from President Sam Houstonqv for a colony located east of the Peters colony. Eager to fulfill the terms of the contract, Mercer returned to the United States in February 1844 to obtain assistance in financing and promoting his venture. He soon organized the Texas Association and began selling shares for $500 each. By the end of the year, as a result of his energetic advertising, more than 100 families had complied with the requirements of his contract and received land certificates. Mercer's contract was a source of controversy, however. Houston had granted it after vetoing a bill by the Texas Congress that would have taken away the president's authority to make such contracts without consulting the Congress. Congress overrode Houston's veto the day after the Mercer contract was granted. Mercer's well-known abolitionist sentiments made the colony an issue in the abolition and annexationqv controversy. Land disputes and the resulting court cases were an additional drain on Mercer's time and finances. BIOGRAPHY: Many of the county's early settlers also came to stake claim to land grants from the Republic of Texas, or as a part of Charles Fenton Mercer 's colony The county was named for Memuchan Hunt , the first Texas minister to the United States. Greenville, which was established on land donated by McQuinney Howell Wright and James G. Bourland, became the county seat. Greenville, the county seat, is named for Thomas Jefferson Green , who, among other things, was second in command of the Meir Expedition. Narrowly named Pickneyville in honor of Governor J. Pickney Henderson, a change was written in at the last moment, and the first seat of Collin County ended up named as such. The first sale of town lots for Greenville was held in 1846, though the city was not officially incorporated until 1850. This was because after the initial survey was done, it was decided that the format of the town needed to be moved somewhat so that trees for lumber would be included in the town site. Because the surveyor had gone, and was not located until 1850, Greenville was not incorporated until that time. BIOGRAPHY: By the end of the Civil War, the county's slave population boomed to over 1200 as slaves from the deep south were sent to Texas in order that they might be kept for safekeeping. Rehobeth, a rural community four miles north of Carthage on U. S. Highway 59 in central Panola County, was settled after the Civil War.qv The first school was built prior to 1878. In that year John Wesley Biggs and his wife Mary Ann deeded land for a Methodist church, a new school, and a cemetery. In the mid-1930s Rehobeth had a school, a store, a church, a cemetery, and a number of houses. In the 1940s the school was consolidated with the Carthage school, but in the mid-1960s a church, a cemetery, and a few scattered dwellings still remained in the area. The original church burned in 1978 and was replaced by a new building. In the early 1990s a church and a cemetery still marked the site of the community. No population estimates were available. BIBLIOGRAPHY: John Barnette Sanders, Index to the Cemeteries of Panola County (Center, Texas, 1964). Marker Files, Texas Historical Commission, Austin. I did not find a marriage listing in Hunt on my Texas Marriage CD for this couple but ask John Armstrong maybe it was just missed on the CD making. What is the first census you have for John and Edna I cant find them in Hunt or Panola counties 1860 or 1870 I tried Kelly and Kelley. John King Kelly (born Sept 1833 in Dublin, Ireland) married Edna Jane Partlow 26 Jul 1866) in what was then Rehobeth, Texas (Greenville area, Hunt County I believe). Edna Jane (or Jane Edna) was born in Georgia in 1847. What I cannot find is John's father's name. I believe it is Thomas John Kelly. Info is greatly appreciated.
