He was J. C. Hickey, 102, who died in the Old Soldiers' Home at Austin Saturday. His funeral services were held at White Rock where he lived for years. The centenarian, last of his immediate family, is survived only by great grandchildren and other distant relatives, a number of who reside in this county. Greenville (Texas) Messenger, Thursday, 4 Jun 1936, page 8: CENTENARIAN IS BURIED W. ROCK J. C. Hickey, 102, who died in the Confederate Home at Austin, was buried in Webb Hill Cemetery in the White Rock section on Monday. A native of Tennessee he settled in the White Rock section in 1885, at the age of 51, lived there for 44 years and had spent seven years in the Confederate Home at Austin. 3. Tonya, There is a John C Hickey who died on 5-31-1936 in Travis Co TX according to the Texas Death Index His death cert is # 20468 Mary is not there as the Death Index starts in 1903. In the 1930 Travis Co Tx census there is a J C Hickey age 94 widowed his age at his first marriage is listed as 21 he is listed as born in Tennessee as where his parents He is listed as a inmate in the Mens Confederate Home in Austin TX. 1880 Roane Co TN shows a John C Hickey b abt 1832 Tn as the stepson of a Marvina Hickey who is widowed This census does not show if he is married, single, widowed or divorced however. He is the only John Hickey who even comes close to the age of the one your are looking for. 1870 Hamilton Co TN shows a John C Hickey age 25 a city laborer b TN with a wife named Mary J age 28 b GA 1870 Roane Co TN shows the following who just may be the one you are looking for John Hickey age 35 b TN (b abt 1835) Mary A wife age 34 b TN (b abt 1836) Nancy E age 13 b TN (b abt 1857) Margaret I age 11 b TN (b abt 1859) Joseph D age 9 b TN ( b abt 1861) Martha A age 7 b TN (b abt 1863) Mary C age 5 b TN (b abt 1865) Manda/Mauda? age 3 b TN (b abt 1867) Sallie age 4/12 b TN ( b abt 1870) ' I cant find them in 1880 unless the John C Hickey is the same man in Roane Co with Malvina in 1880 if so what happened to the wife and kids There is no Joseph Hickey who matches their son in 1880 Census index in the whole US. There is a listing for 2 marriages in Roane Co TN for a J P Hickey and there is a Joseph P Hickey in 1900 Alabama who was born in Tn but the wife is different from both marriages. IN Tn marriage there is 2 John Hickey marriages in Roane Co TN John Hickey to Mary Richards 9-20-1884 Roane Co (Not couple named above but might be 2nd marriage for John need more info) John J Hickey to Polly Ann Mynatt 8-26-1856 also Roane Co TN What was Mary Catherine Hickey's husband's first name? Maybe I can find them on the census to locate John C Hickey. Do you know when and where Mary Catherine married? 3. The State of Texas had 2 laws requiring registration of births and deaths prior to the one in 1903. There was one in 1875 and there is a two volumn set of books which includes the very few Counties who chose to participate. Most chose not to participate, but Fannin County did. Maybe Hunt Co did also. Check with your local Library as this is where I saw these two books. They are very small books & easily overlooked. These books may also include the 2nd registration law, but it's been too long since I looked at them for me to remember. Most Counties (& Doctors) chose to ignore the laws because the State did not provide any money for the recordings. 3. Hi Jo Ann, Birth certificates weren't required until 1903 so that is the earliest year the state has records for. However, birth records were kept in family Bibles and other such family record books. She was born July 17, 1912 and died July 30, 1992. Children are Robert Carroll (my dad), Charles Edward, Shirley and Joyce. I believe she was born in Commerce, Hunt Co, Texas and lived at Delta Co, Texas (not sure how long). I think she may have been part of the Moxley family in the Klondike area. Both Gladys and Homer died in Hope, Hempstead Co, Ark and are buried in Hempstead co (or a county to the south). Homer was born July 10 1910 and died July 1985. I would be interested in information from cousins (my dad, aunts and uncle have all died). I would very much like to know who her parents are. Particularly I would like a copy their obituaries, birth license, marriage license and death cert. Information from licenses would be fine for now. I will be glad to reimburse expenses for copies. 3. David His death cert should tell you where he was buried at and where he died as well. You might also try finding an obit for him You can order a uncertified copy for 7.00 plus a small s/h fee from http://www.jayodom.org/texasdeathcertificates.html I have used Jay many times and his turnaround is usually pretty quick. If you need a certified copy you have to send to Austin. There charge is 20.00 for the first copy and 3.00 for any additional copies as long as you order it at the same time.
