    1. Re: [TXHUNT] Hopewell Cemetery on findagrave
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: robbiethree Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.hunt/2002.3.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been putting them on findagrave, too... but since these are so new, I have not yet added the additions to what I had put up previously, I will begin on that in the next few days. I wish somebody WOULD put it in the newspaper, then maybe there would be some interest, maybe some volunteers... I don't know that I would have the energy to keep doing this. I was hoping that if I posted some information about it online... somebody might step forward and take over. I am only one person. I had been working on it in small batches, it was such a tangle of vegetation that it might take you half an hour just to get to a marker... hacking away with a machete, every step a battle for space to move, and many times there might be a marker right in front of you but you wouldn't SEE it until you were almost touching it, it was THAT bad. I have never seen anything like it, and I hope never to again. I was not completely alone in my determination to get this project started. I was contacted by a man who saw one of my postings and contacted me expressing an interest in becoming involved, he was already working on his little obsession, another neglected Hunt County cemetery - but still offered his help, he would do some work with his saw while I gathered transcriptions and photos but before we got to that, the county showed up, FINALLY! He has been a big help to me in other ways though... and I am very grateful for all of his help..... (thanks, David!) He is also the one who began to make his OWN calls which may have furthered the effort along. And, there were other people involved, and they should not be forgotten. Hunt County's Head of Maintenance... one of the Commmissioners... who will be putting together a packet of documents for David, which will be shared with me. The Hunt County Judge's Department.. I have had some help... and I am grateful to every one of those people. Very grateful. Again, if you need anything that I may have, please feel free to contact me. I will try to do what I can. Author: robbiethree Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.hunt/2002.1.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am so happy to learn that this has helped you. You know, this was rapidly becoming a major obsession with me... I was constantly finding barriers to all my efforts. I was spending so much time working on it that I was not sleeping or eating regularly. And dealing with the county started out seeming very hopeful.. but it had been so long and I had heard so many promises that I had finally given up on my belief that they were seriously considering going in to clean it up. You cannot IMAGINE how happy I was to see them on Wednesday! And the relief! It was very intense. I smiled all day as I worked. :-) I got 70-something transcriptions and 115 photos that day.. of course, you still have to work at clearing yourself, I had finally taken the initiative and bought tools, you can't really use power tools because of the state of the markers... but... nippers, hand saws, machetes, worked. I had a terrible moment or two yesterday when a huge bug crawled on me and I couldn't get him off of me... LOL. Then I looked down at the marker I was about to transcribe and there were TONS of them all over it... at that very moment they began to FLY and get all over me... I couldn't help it, I know I am not supposed to behave like this in a cemetery but I started to scream and scream, I could not stop... and when it was over, I actually cried, (over bugs!), and I was shaking all over and could barely write. LOL, I am SUCH a girl! ;-) The irony of this lies in the fact that I have encountered several snakes there, and was never affected like that. It's okay to laugh about it, I know I would if somebody told me that same story... LOL Well, I am so glad to be of help to you, I hope to continue to help you find what you need. I hope they print this news in the Greenville newspaper as some of them moved there. There is a man named John Armstrong in Greenville that did the cemeteries there and put them in Find A Grave. I think I'll send him an email to let him know. He also helps with researching the old Greenville newspaper. I have found that a lot of times you can find bits and pieces of information about your family when you find the surnames in the same cemetery that really help you piece things together. I know I am missing somebody but for the life of me I can't remember who. I have Stokely R. Cheney being buried in Hopewell, but will have to search to see where I got that. It doesn't sound right and wonder now why I had him being buried there. I can't do a search on my emails with the version of Yahoo I've got now, but I think I'll switch to the old version so I can. If you intend to vist, very soon would be good, before things begin to take over again. They are about halfway finished, (as of yesterday), with the larger stuff, and you can walk around in there much more freely now, but please watch for the thorned vines... they are all over the ground, reaching up at you, and hanging from all the trees... animal burrow holes, and of course.. the snakes. I am working on transcriptions and photos of markers, they are here, if you want to look (Note: I am not finished getting what I have posted).. and I still have a lot of the cemetery left to do... but I am going back out on Saturday to start again. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhunt/hopewell.html Hope this helps! Author: robbiethree Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.hunt/2002.3.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You are not going to believe this... I went out yesterday after having bought a TON of tools - the COUNTY was in there working! I was so happy that I ran up to the foreman and was just gushing, I know that my response made them all feel they were doing something really important. They are more than halfway finished with the larger stuff... they were using... a brushhog? Not sure but it was really getting at the little trees and things... and they had convicts doing the manual labor. I kept hearing them yell because there was holes, and markers falling into the ground, and snakes, of course. It was pretty scary, I know, for them. I started working behind them while I was gathing transcriptions and photos, with my hand tools, it was really hard work but I got a lot of new information. I am going to pick up a packet of document on the Hopewell Cemetery (coming from a Hunt County Commissioner) at the library tomorrow, you might want to contact me if you aren't finding what you need, I may have it then. :-) I am up to the name MITCHELL now but may be adding some "orphan" files as I go... Will be going back, probably on Saturday to pick up where I left off, much of the cemetery has not been touched yet. I really hope that somebody will take over some of the upkeep of the cemetery - when it is finally free from the vegetation, I would really hate to see it look like it was again. It is very hard to get the county in there and you have to stay on top of it... I am hoping that maybe some of the families might take an interest in it. Okay, all of that said, here is the link to what I have up so far, I am still adding to it... and it may be awhile before I get it all up... but I'm working on it, rest assured! http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhunt/hopewell.html I really hope this helps you! What are the names you are looking for? I might respond before I post if I know, (it might help you get what you need faster because I am trying to do them alphabetically)... to let you know when those names have been transcribed and documented with photos. :-) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
