    1. [TXHUNT-L] PFC John George, Hero of Wake Island, Liberated from Prison, 1945
    2. Sarah Swindell
    3. PFC JOHN GEORGE, HERO of WAKE ISLAND, LIBERATED FROM PRISON PFC John F. George, one of the small group of Marines, who fought so gallantly in the defense of Wake Island in the early days of the war, and the first Hunt County boy to fall into the hands of the Japanese, has been liberated, according to a message received here late Thursday by relatives. The former Hunt County farm boy, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank George, spent more than forty-five months in Japanese prison camps, and had only been able to get a few cards through to relatives. The message Thursday night gave no details as to his physical condition, but stated that more information would follow. PFC George attended (McLeod), Kingston, and Celeste schools, and entered the Marines in March of 1941. He is a brother of Mrs. George McGee, Celeste; Mrs. Lessie Addington and Mrs. Troy Brooks, RR 2, Greenville; H. M. George, Haslet, Texas, and Mrs. Edith Morton, Dallas. 1. [TXHUNT-L] From 1918-1973 Journal of Leta Masters Abrams, Sister-in-law of John Eber Roach
    2. Sarah Swindell
    3. >From 1918-1973 Journal of Leta Masters Abrams, Sister-in-law of John Eber Roach 1918 Trip to Arkansas for Horace's Wedding When Horace and Ethel were planning to marry September 5, 1918, they asked me to be a bride's maid in the wedding. They were to be married in Bentonville, Arkansas, where Dr. Moody and family had moved from Greenville when he retired from his practice. I was thrilled over going. I had graduated from Burleson College at Greenville in June of 1918; so, I planned to use my white georgette crepe graduating dress for the wedding. George Weatherall was Horace's best man, but he and Horace were not going up there as soon as I was. I left Celeste around the 1st of September, on the night train, on the Santa Fe, which came about 8:30. That train had run at that time from Dallas to Paris since I could remember. After it got to Paris, passengers going on into Arkansas went on the Frisco, but they switched the cars and we did not have to change. I had ridden the train by myself every since I was a kid in the grade school when I went to Bowie to go to school; and then back and forth when I was in Baylor College at Belton and Southwestern University at Georgetown, but this was my first time to go out of the state. It was my first time to ride in the Pullman. They did not sell Pullman tickets at Celeste, but I was supposed to get my reservation after I got on the train, and that is what I did. It was new to me, but I caught on fast, but, of course, I did not sleep much that night. The train would wake me every time it stopped. I remember looking out of the window in the morning at the large trees, and, of course, we were in the Ozarks. I did not realize then how much I would learn to like the mountains in later years. I recall that most of the passengers got of the train at one place when we were stopped for a few minutes. I also recall going through Fort Smith and Fayetteville. When we got to Rogers, Arkansas, I had to get off and change to go to Bentonville, which was about six more miles from there. There were some people there who were driving over in a car, and they let me go over with them. The Moodys had a big two-story house and quite a number of the family were there for the wedding. We went around some before the wedding. I remember driving over to Bella Vista, Arkansas. I can't remember too much about it, but since then I have heard so much about that resort and I remember being there. We left Bentonville the afternoon of the wedding, or rather it was at night. Ethel's sister, Sue, was coming back to Texas and she and I were together in one berth. George was down the car a piece and Horace and Ethel were at the end of the coach. When we got to Celeste the next morning, Horace and Ethel took the car and went on their honeymoon in Texas and I got ready to go to teaching school in Rockwall, which was in a few days. That was my first school and that is where I met Faye and Lola, who are still my friends. (Leta Masters Abrams) " Our Patchwork Quilts: Life is a Collection of Little 'Peaces' "
