In 1891 Thorp Spring was the birthplace of Brigadier General Claudius Miller Easley "Speck." General Easley was killed in action in Okinawa in 1945 during World War II when commanding the 325th Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Infantry Division. He was honored with burial in the Arlington National Cemetery.
