Subject: Slab grave in Martin Cemetery Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 22:00:19 EST From: EffyPratt@aol.com To: granbury@genealogy.org My great great grandmother Grisella Snelson was buried in Martin Cemetery in Lipan. Her grave is about two feet high, and six feet long, made of stacked slabs of rock. The slabs are about 2 to 3 inches thick and are a foot or so long, each. There are two more graves of this rock slab type construction over in Jaybird Cemetery in Erath County (located on a private ranch). These two slab graves are also located near the graves of my great grandfather William H. Snelson, his sister, Anne Snelson, and probably his first wife, Lucy Townsen Snelson and three childrens' graves. Does this slab type of grave have some special meaning? Did the style come from a particular religious group? Your opinions and knowledge would be appreciated.
