Following is the obituary of Josie Belle Merrill, former Tolar teacher, from today's Fort Worth Star Telegram (09/03/1999): Josie Belle Merrill AMARILLO -- Josie Belle Merrill, 96, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and teacher, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in Amarillo. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Live Oak Cemetery in Dublin. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin, Texas. The Rev. David Leach of First United Methodist Church in Dublin will officiate. Josie Merrill, daughter of John H. Smith and Alice Cline Smith, was born on her parents' farm near Dublin May 25, 1903. She was a graduate of Dublin High School, Tarleton State University and Baylor University. Her husband, Louis P. Merrill, preceded her in death in 1986. Before and after rearing her family, Mrs. Merrill taught school in Tolar, Glen Rose and Midlothian. She and her husband owned ranches at Glen Rose and Midlothian. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service in Fort Worth and First United Methodist Church in Midlothian. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth, Ladies of the Leaf and Daughters of the American Revolution in Waxahachie and St. Paul's Home Demonstration Club. Survivors: Son, John L. Merrill Sr. of Crowley; daughter, Marilyn Kenyon of Amarillo ; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
