Sept. 27, 1892 in Granbury, Hood Co.,TX. His parents were John A. MILLER and Clyde WALLS (yes, Clyde was a lady). Jess ran away from home at the age of 12 (due to abuse, I was told) and never returned. I know his parents had another son in August 1903, as it is listed in the Hood Co. register of births. Subject: Slab grave in Martin Cemetery Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 22:00:19 EST From: EffyPratt@aol.com To: granbury@genealogy.org My great great grandmother Grisella Snelson was buried in Martin Cemetery in Lipan. Her grave is about two feet high, and six feet long, made of stacked slabs of rock. The slabs are about 2 to 3 inches thick and are a foot or so long, each. There are two more graves of this rock slab type construction over in Jaybird Cemetery in Erath County (located on a private ranch). These two slab graves are also located near the graves of my great grandfather William H. Snelson, his sister, Anne Snelson, and probably his first wife, Lucy Townsen Snelson and three childrens' graves. Does this slab type of grave have some special meaning? Did the style come from a particular religious group? Your opinions and knowledge would be appreciated. The Hood County Query and Family Data Page has a new entry: ------------------------------------------------------ My grt-grt g.f. was John DAVIS m. to Ann PRITCHARD. Their d. Jennie Teresa COGBURN(1877) was my grt. g.m; she & Wm. I. COGBURN's children are Joseph "Roy", Laura "Lula" BEALL, Willie Floyd, Hurley Dennis, Dollie(my g.m. married Arvellor "Rube" HENSLEE of Hood Co.)& Beula COX. She and her brother Joe Monroe DAVIS (m'd Bertie WHISENHUNT) were born in Ellis Co., TX, Ennis & Waxahachie, respectively; also had a sister Mollie, who may have been a Mary. I've just learned that Ann probably died about the time Jennie was around 8 yr old and reportedly John DAVIS took his children to Hood Co. Molly married Milton HENSLEE of Hood Co., who is also my grt-g.f. Maxfield F. HENSLEE's (m'd Lucinda MATLOCK/children: John, Buck, Enoch, Hettie NELSON, Maggie GEE, Jim, Will, Jesse, Cleveland, Gilbert, Arvellor)half brother. Mollie & Milton's children were Eunice DAVENPORT, Fronie DILL, Leete CANTRELL, Bud, Mitt DYE, & Walter. Interested in hearing from descendants or any family info someone could provide on this line; have nothing on John & Ann PRITCHARD DAVIS. Ihave some other descendant info willing to share. To All Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this message is to inform all genealogists & researchers who subscribe to TEXAS Rootsweb Lists, of a very important web site that now has a searchable database of over 1,650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks, between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers had fought in the Indian Wars in Florida and also the War with Mexican, and then the Civil War. It is without doubt that some of the descendants of these men are most likely in every county of the great state of Texas. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT: The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead, of Virginia, and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, as being under his command and/or responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by 'quantity.' (ie. 426 males 20-30 yrs, or 34 females 20-30 yrs) HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has turned most of the 'quantities' into actual names. The list of these officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see the Barracks Notebook section) are available, free of any charge. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," for those who served at this federal military post on the Niagara Frontier. Also available is a wealth of rare and interesting information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com
