    1. [TXHOOD-L] Duke in Hood County (Married D. C. Cogdell)
    2. Joann Rhome Herring
    3. Hi - I really don't have a lot on Duke - I have W. E. Duke born between 1815 and 1820 in TN, perhaps Montgomery Co, TN - found a W. E. Duke living with his mother (mother Head of Household) in the 1850 census in Montgomery Co, TN with a Sarah Norfleet nearby but absolutely cannot prove he is my guy - looked for two years to find something to show they came to Texas - not a thing - nothing before that time either. Anyway, for sure, found MY W. E. Duke in the Bowie County, Texas 1860 census with wife Sarah and daughter Lucy Norfleet Duke (about two) - he was listed as an overseer and didn't have much money. Then I found him again in the Red River Texas 1870 census with wife Sarah and daughters Lucy and Fannie (about 9) Then nothing - gone - kaput - but in Lucy Norfleet Duke Cogdell's obit - it says (and the family was very prone to exageration) that she was descended from an old southern aristocratic family that lost all their money in the civil war (I don't think so because I don't think he had much money to loose) - it also says, the family came to Hood County when Lucy was 15, so that would make it about 1873 - then the plot thickens: In Composition in Black and White (which is a book about Josephine Cogdell - grand daughter of Lucy Norfleet Duke Cogdell and the black writer she married George Schuyler - and their daughter Philippa's life) it is mentioned that her maternal grandmother (who would have been Sarah (Perhaps Norfleet) Duke) was put in an asylum for the insane. Who the heck knows the truth of this - I don't - anyway, I have noticed a number of things that mentions a W. A. Duke in Hood County but I have no idea if this is the same person. I have found a Woodson Duke from TN who came to Texas in May of 1836 to Bowie County Texas - and was there in the 1850 census with a wife (not Sarah) so maybe he is my guy but can't prove it. So here is the information on the family. HELP!!!! Joann Rhome Herring in Alaska Descendants of W. E. Duke, * 1 W. E. DUKE, * 1) Death Certificate-Register # 30981, signed by D. C. 2. Barbara W Ray
    3. I am searching for any record or mention of my ancestor Edward HAYNES, who is said in a family history (written by his nephew) to have died in Hood Co. in abt. 1868. However, I cannot find him in any of the Hood Co. records I have checked. He is on the 1860 census in Hempstead Co., AR, and was a Primitive Baptist minister who founded a number of churches in Habersham Co, GA, Carroll Co., GA, and southwest Arkansas. His wife was Arry HICKS HAYNES, and his children were James M., Humphrey, John C., Jonathan (who d. in AR in 1862), Nancy MALONE, Arthur E., and Matilda E. I also have no record of what happened to wife Arry and daughter Matilda after Edward died. Any suggestions on where to look in records (obits, church records, etc.) will be very much appreciated. On the opposite side of the square was the Granbury Opera House still in business today. While checking local records during the period I found no reference to Jasper bur I did note the following GREER from tax and other lists years: George GREER 1875 C. E. F. GREER 1877, 1881, 1884-5 J. H. GREER 1879 Eva, Viola GREER 1879-1919 S. D. GREER 1887-1895 Barney GREER 1887-1900 T. J. GREER 1890 J. T. GREER 1890 Lee GREER 1898-1914 B. F. GREER 1899-1901 T. P. GREER 1899-1901 Mr. GREER 1903-1940 L, Josephine GREER 1903-1940 H. G. GREER 1904-1912, 1916-1919, 1928-1939 W. T. GREER 1911-1912 D. E. V. GREER 1911-1949 Jell GREER 1911-1949 R. P.
