Subject: Re: [TXHOOD-L] Granbury Square Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 20:30:48 -0500 From: Bill Caddell <bcaddell@hcnews.com> To: Frank Saffarrans <opa@hcnews.com> Frank, I have been so glad to find Hood County home page and List. You referenced "http://www.granbury.com/~ancestor/z/biog/SquareUses.htm". I am interested in history of the "Sellars Building" which was in 1964 the "Hood County News", now the "Downtown Store" on the north side of the square. In examining the misc files at the Hood Co. Library, I find a reference "Various old pictures show the downstairs of the building occupied at various times by Geo. & Henry Wright, meat market and restaurant; and the Icicle Restaurant with 'meat market' in small letters below." I have seen the pictures in Ewell's "History of Hood County" and on the wall in the "Ice Cream Parlor" on the west side of the square. Re: my previous msg of May 8th "I recently found out that my grandfather, Jasper Pinkney GREER (b. 15 Nov 1874, Ringold, LA) had a restaurant and meat market in Granbury, Hood Co., TX during the 1890s - 1905. My 82 yr old mother" (Jasper's daughter now residing in the Granbury Meadows Senior Citizen Apartments) "said she knew nothing about the details." Jasper Greer of Miller County (Texarkana), AR came to Granbury sometime in the 1890s and my mother seems to remember was in partnership with another man in a restaurant and meat market on the square. He was single, about 20 years old and, apparently, "came out west to make his fortune.". In checking tax and other records I noted there were about a dozen GREER listed, but not a Jasper. I suspect that Jasper was related to one or more of these GREERs. For whatever reason, he left and in 1906 married in Sulphur Springs, OK and moved to Miller County, AR where his parents and siblings lived. His father had previously settled in Miller County in about 1880 from Ringold, LA. That's all I have been able to glean from very limited info. 3. Forwarded by TxHood-L List Moderator Subject: COLONY CEMETERY Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 22:01:53 EDT From: RickIPratt@aol.com To: opa@hcnews.com Hello Folks, Just an update on this years' Juneteenth Celebration. On Saturday June 19, 1999, the gate to the cemetery grounds will be open from 9 AM until 4 PM. As a part of the Colony Cemetery Committee, Inc. annual fundraiser, we plan to serve a barbecue lunch. There will be a $3.00 charge for plates. The lunch is scheduled to begin serving at Noon and will be served until 1 PM. There will be relatives of some of the original Colony area residents attending. Including Ms. Catherine McCormick who actually grew up in the Colony before moving on. Activities for the day include dominoes and horseshoes. We also want to mention that the cemetery has received an official historic designation by the State of TX and has been registered with the county clerk. In addition an application is currently being reviewed by the TX Historical Commission for a subject marker. Thanks to the support of the community towards last years fundraiser there are enough funds to purchase a large roadside marker. This year we will be setting up tents and gathering chairs and tables for the event on June 18th, Friday evening at 5 PM. We would welcome any volunteers for the setup and for the following cleanup on Saturday after the event. Also on Saturday June 12, there will be a sprucing up brigade gathering to police the area in anticipation of the Juneteenth celebration. If you would like to help please contact Joe Perkins (817)5732282 or Rickie Pratt (817)573-4591 wk#. As always, we will gratiously accept donations to continue our efforts to preserve a piece of our local heritage. We look forward to seeing you there. Holmes" <jholmes@imagin.net> To: granbury@emcee.com Is there any information on the "Holmes Hollow" valley (located between Tolar & Glen Rose) that's mentioned in your "Hood County Landmarks and Vanished Communities .... the places grandpa talked about" section? I'm tryin' to fill in some of the blanks in the HOLMES family history, and although my grandpa Henry Wayne HOLMES (2/12/85-11/12/18) died some 25 years before I arrived (they lived in the 2 story house that faces east towards town, at the very end of Bridge St.) , I don't even remember my Dad or Mother (who was from Tolar) mentioning anything about the "hollow". Although I didn't have the good fortune of havin' a grandpa to educate me about early Hood County life, ...... some of my fondest memories (early 40's & 50's) are of Saturday mornin' whitlin' sessions down on the Square and listenin' to the old timers spinnin' yarns(?) about my Dad's shenanigans. I hope to visit the "Depot" soon, (Dad worked there in the 30's as a railroad telegrapher) and although I've just discovered your web site (and really like it), I'm sure that a personal visit will be much more rewarding. Boy!..... what a treasure trove of stuff yawl have acquired !!! Thanks for any information you may find on the "Hollow." Joe V. I'm tryin' to fill in some blanks in the HOLMES family history, and although my grandpa Henry Wayne Holmes (2/12/85-11/12/18) died some 25 years before I came along, I don't even remember my Dad - Patrick LaVon Holmes (5/20/11-2/11/72) or Mom - Joanna nee Thomason (Tolar & Lipan) mentioning anything about the "hollow." Although I didn't have the good fortune of havin' grandpa to educate me about early Hood County, some of my fondest memories as a child (early 40's & 50's) are of Saturday morning whitlin' sessions down on the Square and listening to the old timers spinnin' yarns(?) about my Dad's shenanigans. As a youngster, Dad set type at the newspaper and worked as a railroad telegrapher at the depot, as well as installing some of the first electricity, when REA came to Hood County. He also owned Holmes laundry & dry cleaning delivery service, as well as working over at the "bummer plant" in Cowtown. (Then Consolidated-Vultee which became General Dynamics and is now Lochkeed) They lived the 2 story house facing towards town, at the west end of W. Bridge St. Thanks to anyone who may be of help, Joe V. Holmes Fort Worth, TX
