I'm wondering if there was any source for court papers in Hillsboro, Hill Co, TX. My grandfather, Alf[red] SPEARS and his brother, Hop SPEARS were arrested by the Sheriff, Tom Bell in Hillsboro, TX. A letter from the Sheriff dated 1 June 1896 was sent to Zachariah LaFever in Hudgens, TN advising that he had in custody Alf Spears and Hop Spears, charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol and that they alleged that they went by the name Spears in TX and LaFever in Tennessee. I'm wondering if Zachariah is my grgrandfather. The Sheriff asked Zachariah LaFever for information on the boys. Unfortunately, we don't have his reply. I am trying to trace further back into the parentage of Alfred Willie Spears b. 11 April 1874 Sparta, White, TN. He is my grandfather. If anyone has any ideas on tracing these court papers, please advise. Thank you, Cindy Spears Faulkner

The ladies at the county clerks office are very helpful with things like this. If there is a record you might try and find out through them. I recently went through some birth, death, marriage , and old probate records there and they were very helpful to a stranger.
