I am looking for anyone who can possibly help me with any of the above families of Itasca & Covington Cos. Thank you, Diane Ethridge Conroe, TX
Great! You all have found Grandpa! John P. is my great-grandfather. Fannie was his second wife, and the Garrett there is her son, I believe. I am curious about the other Wilkinsons. I think John P. moved to Hill County in the early 1880s from Walker County because of family there, but I cannot prove it;. I know that he and Fannie named one of their children Ed. Could it be for the Ed mentioned in graveyard? My grandfather, only son of his first marriage, married and lived in Limestone County, where he is buried. Thanks so much for this information! love joan P.S. John P. was a Confederate veteran -- he served in Wood's Mississippi Cavalry all during the War of Northern Aggression. He died two days after Christmas in 1925 -- I was a baby, and my mother took me to his bedside. At that time one of his sons was sheriff of Hill County and lived in the jail. For this is the day that the Lord hath made Join me in rejoicing in it, and let us be glad!

That would be great Anita if you could send a copy of that index to Itasca Cemetery. You wouldn't happen to have a listing of who all is buried there, would you? I really haven't been into the town of Itasca in about 20 years... or a little more... since we played them in sports during High School... and it can be hard to search a whole cemetery.... although I cheat... I take the kids and fan them out and tell them the names to look for. LOL Thanks Anita! Diana Holland P.O. Box 47 Abbott, TX 76621
In Reviewing the marriages of Hill Co., I find where Ed Wilkinson married Ada Miller on October 15, 1885. Keith Reed Arlington, Tx. I found the following tombstones for the name Wilkinson in the Itasca cemetery. This index was done in 1986, so there may be additional ones by now. I do not have block and lot number. However, they are located in the C. section. I think I have a map. I can make a copy of it and send to Diana. It may or may not help. Here is what I found: Charles W. Wilkinson, Jan. 5, 1900 Mar 11, 1957 Ed Wilkinson Jan 20, 1858 May 20, 1921 Ada M. Wilkinson April 18, 1868 Oct. 24,1950 Genevieve Wilkinson April 9, 1894 June 10, 1923 In another block not far from this one, I don't think I found the following names. John P. Wilkinson Co 1 (I wonder if this isn't an I) Wood's Conded Cav. No. dates of birth and death Fannie A. Wilkinson Feb. 1, 1848 Apr. 23, 1933 In same lot: J. G. Garrett Jan. 31, 1880 Nov. 27, 1941 P. A. wife of J. G. Garrett Dec. 15, 1886 May 4, 1909 Hope this will help. I got it from the funeral home in Itasca, so maybe they would have it again. The name is John P Wilkinson, and I think there may be other Wilkinsons in the same plot. If there are, I would like the names of any there also. Digital picture would be fine. l will be glad to re-imburse you any out of pocket costs. I had an experience in the Itasca cemetery a couple of years ago when I was looking for my great-grandfather's grave. I had locked my keys in the car when I was eating lunch in Hillsboro so I was late in the afternoon getting out to Itasca. I went by the funeral home on an off-chance, and sure enough, records there showed they had handled his funeral, and the lady gave me the grave number and where to find the cemetery. Now as some of you know, this is located a couple of miles out of town on a little traveled country road. It is laid out in neat squares, and I did not have the numbering system. As I am mildly handicapped, I was driving slowly up and down the interior lanes, trying to read the family names on the plots. Then chunk! my car went dead. Absolutely dead, right in the middle of the cemetery less than hour from sundown. No way could I get it started again. So I hobbled out, made my way to the corner and hoped for a car to come by before dark. Finally, a pickup, going in the wrong direction, but the kind gentleman stopped and asked me my problem. He said he did not have a cell phone in the car, but he would drive me back into Itasca and see if we could find a police official. In front of a pizza parlor we found a car with a cherry on top and I went in and asked for someone official. The man who claimed it said he was a fireman, but he could help me if he could catch a guy that ran a parts shop and garage. This man was closing up, but he agreed to tow in my car and see what he could do. It needed a new alternator and a new belt, so he drove into Hillsboro to get one while I went back and ate a pizza. It was too dark to look for my grandfather's grave now, and I was due back next day in Oklahoma so I had to leave. I was grateful for the kindness of all the Itasca folk. Incidentally, if anyone is going out to the Itasca cemetery, I would surely like to have a picture of his grave. John P. Wilkinson, died in December, 1925. He was a Confederate veteran. love joan For this is the day that the Lord hath made Join me in rejoicing in it, and let us be glad!
Joan, If you'd like to send me info on how to get to the cemetery and any info you have on where the tombstone is located, I will try to get there in early January after I get my money for the month and before I start nursing school and have to give up genealogy for awhile. I could send you a digital picture if that would work for you, and/or will get some film and take a regular pic and mail it... Have a safe and Happy Holiday season... Di Diana R. Appie May nee Duke was my step-ggrandmother. I knew her (early 1950's) as Grandma May, an elderly invalid, bedridden. She was living in a small house in Whitney at the time. She was being cared for by her daughter, Josie. She is buried with her husband in the Old Ft Graham Cemetery. Josie May (could have the married name of Prentiss) was a schoolteacher with an intense interest in fossils. I am interested in finding anyone who knew Appie or Josie and could tell me more about them, such as whether Appie and Josie were their actual given names or were nicknames. What Was Josie's actual married name, and where did she go after Appie died? I am the grandson of Bill and Rosa May, who were also living at Whitney at that time. He was a retired carpenter who had a five+ acre farm right on the Whitney city limits on the highway to Hillsboro, and who offered eggs, fruits (mostly peaches) and vegetables for sale out of his living room. -- Buz Gerald Busby (aka Buz, aka The Buzzard) Dallas TX I am researching the families of Busby, Perritte, Shannon, May, Duke, Weehunt, Lechler, Drahn and others, and the migrations of these families into Texas.

So, when you come to see your grandfather maybe you can drive up there together. Itasca is a nice little town. I read an e-mail that said the last time they visited Itasca all of the buildings were boarded up. I hope the next time she comes this way she will drive through Itasca. Apparently they have a very good school system. A lot of Hillsboro students go either to Itasca or Abbott school instead of Hillsboro. Their supt. of schools is supposed to be tops. Phyllis, Do you know who the parents were of your Harriet Louisa Brown ? I am searching ( in vain I'm afraid) for the parents or guardians of Ules Jackson Brown. His father was Marrion Jefferson Brown and died when Ules was 7 years old. Some one must have raised he and his two sisters-possibly family. Ules was born in 1883 or 1884. Marrion was born 1863. Marrion was born in Hill Co. Hoping for a connection !! Kat, Itasca is just 10 miles from Hillsboro, so I would say it would not take you very long to drive on to Itasca. Anita Adler Glad to be back in Hill County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Katrina Weis" <kat_weis@hotmail.com> To: <TXHILL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [TXHILL] Re: TXHILL-D Digest V02 #161 > Hope I am not butting into a private conversation just wanted to say that I > actually have a grandfather who just moved from Itasca to Hillsboro he lived > out in Itasca for my whole life that I know of maybe longer. 25+ isn't a > long time but I will miss traveling out there.
