    1. [TXHILL] What it means to be Texan
    2. Katrina Weis
    3. This was forwarded to me and I wanted to pass it on. I know it isn't specifically about genealogy but maybe someone might want this so they can understand what it truly means to be a Texan. Or if you're like me and far from home maybe to just remind us of what we are. Proud to be a Texan!!! When you're from Texas, people that you meet ask you questions like, "Do you have any cows?" "Do you have horses?" "Bet you got a bunch of guns, eh?" They all want to know if you've been to Southfork. They watched Dallas. Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You'll get it maybe after a second, but who else would? Even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you? In every man, woman and child on this little rock the Good Lord put us on, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride in a pickup. There is some bit of Texas in everyone. Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, "Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?" Do you know why? Because there's no place like Texas. Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas. Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto. Texas is Juneteenth and Texas Independence Day. Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest. Texas is breathtaking mountains in Big Bend. Texas is shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas. Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork. Texas is Mexican food like nowhere in the world, even Mexico. Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Bass Hall. Texas is life legends like Willie Nelson and Buddy Holly, Earl Campbell and Nolan Ryan, Denton Cooley and Michael DeBakey, Sam Rayburn, George Bush, and George W. Bush. Texas is great companies like Dell Computer and Compaq. Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops. Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer. Texas is a place where cities shut down for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and NIOSA River Parade in San Antonio. Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities. If it isn't in Texas, you don't need it. No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas. By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, or California, or Maine, and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because we place being a Texan as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. We included these things in as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part right there. WHEN WE CAME ON. Texas was its own country. The Republic of Texas. Every time I think of that I tear up. It makes you proud to be a Texan!! _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

    1. [TXHILL] 1891-92 Notebook
    2. My great grand father, Benjamin Franklin Baker kept a note book during the years of 1891-92. He wrote his address as McGirk, Hill County, Texas. (Can someome tell me about McGirk?) He was 21 years old, he was a traveling salesman and farm worker. There are many pages torn out of the notebook, but I can see that he kept his accounts in it. I am in the process of copying, "decifering" his handwriting, recording the information and then must put the book in good storage as it is crumbling before my very eyes. If any of the following names and information will help anyone, I'll be glad to send you a copy of information. Names he wrote as customers: Leonard Wales Sheldon, (married Lillie Ann Stembridge-Partain) his future Step-father-in-law W.H. Partain, his future brother-in-law John Anderson Baker, his father W. P. Adams, J. H. Hughes, B.T. Babbets, Mary M. Walker-Baker, W.M. Mason, G.W. Wyatt, C. Hait, Eddy N. Heger, D.D. Ward, H.C. Vannar?a?t, Mr. Blythe, Mr. Pelphery, and Phillip P. Philanders. He also worked for L.W. Shelton and J. Smith. Farming and picking cotton. He seemed to travel from McGirk to Midland, back through San Angelo, Ballinger, Commanche, Hamilton, Coryell Co. to McGirk. Just for fun, here are some of the items: He kept orders such as: pants $1.75 shirt .65 shoes 2.75 shoes 1.25 ginghams 1.20 domestic 1.00 jelly .65 onions .25 coal oil .50 calico 1.50 bleachin .50 flour 1.75 comb .25 28 lbs beef 4.00 12 tallow .05 1 suit 15.50 eye salve lye potash flannel bridle 1.25 hat 2.50 brads .35 paper .05 tobacco .70 socks .10 L. hose .15 Sincerely, C.B. 1. [TXHILL] 1860 Letter
    2. Deven Lewis
    3. The following is a lengthy posting, and this may not be quite the appropriate place to offer it, but I thought the following 1860 letter might be of general interest to Hill County researchers: Letter from Elias MacKey (son of Thomas MacKey and Sarah Murphree MacKey Forsythe) of Hill County, TX, to his sister, Mahala MacKey Burns Ellington Gentry Hicks of El Monte, CA (Letter originally passed down to Delilah Blum Gearhart of Amarillo, TX, descendant of Wallace and Elizabeth ("Betsy") MacKey Sevier (sister of Elias and Mahala)) "Hill Co. Texas July the 16th 1860 My dear Sister, It has been some time since I received your kind letter of Nov. the 2nd & I feel ashamed to mention it but business & brotherly love requires me to answer it. Yours found us all well & this leaves all enjoying reasonable health tho there has been some deaths in the family. Since I recd yours Wallis & Betsy lost a little girl this spring & they lost a little boy last summer their too youngest at that time. They now have another girl which was born this spring. A L Foreman was kiled this spring by the Indians near Cora in Comancha Co. Nancy has come to my house to live. She is not in first rate health. Mother is married & doing tolerable well & enjoys good health her husbands name is Thomas J. Forsythe they live about 2 miles from us on Mill Creek. I believe the ballence of your old acquaintinces are all well. My dear sister at the last spring term of court Mr. Winkler had collected nine hundred & 22 dollars for you after takeing 10 percent for collecting & Mr. Anderson's order has been paid out of that which leaves three hundred & 22 dollars in my hands for you & there is yet some money uncollected on the note as yet though not much. I recon I will get it this fall at court. I would send you the money that I have but for fear of some mistake I want to hear from you a gain. I don't egactly understand your last letter. I cant not under how nor to who you want the draft sent. Your letter is not satisfactory on the subject-& then again it has been so long since it was written that something might be wrong. So upon the whole we think that we had better hear from you again. I want you to be very particular in writing your directions as to sending the draft. I think it will be just as safe to address the letter to you as any other person but you know best. I will send in this the Anders! on or Eubank order which has each payment on the back the date and all so as you can know how to settle with them. My dear sister we are going to have a hard time of it in Texas this year on account of dry weather we have had no rain since the 23 of April to do any good & our crops little account. We will about make bread. The stock water is getting verry scarce & if it dont rain son we will have to drive our stock some where. The Brazos has quit running & it only stands in holes. Our last girl we call Mahala Jane after you. She is about 7 months old & is doing well. You might come to see her some day. Betsy Nancy & all send their love to you & children. Pleas accept a brothers & sisters love while I remain your affectionate brother. E. MacKey" Deven Lewis Hill County Surnames: MacKey, Sevier, Burns, Foreman, Ellington, Boyles

    3. I wrote to Towash Baptist Church last year to find out if the church has membership records from its early days in the town of Towash, but received no reply. Have any of you heard whether such records exist and if it is possible to view them? Deven Lewis Hill County Surnames: MacKey, Sevier, Burns, Foreman, Boyles, Ellington

    1. Re: [TXHILL] Puckett, Ramsey, Pruitt & Bostick families of Hill Co
    2. I grew up at Barry, Navarro County, Tx. None of the names are familiar to me. Sorry. I just thought you might know Leta. She has taught in Conroe a long time and is probably about ready to retire. I wish I had some information about these families, but I don't. Until I started this research I thought I knew about everyone in Navarro County but discovered I don't know very many people after all. I had a cousin, Elizabeth Wallace, who grew up at Coolidge and married Waller Ethridge who also grew up in that area. They have both died. They have a son named James Thomas Ethridge who lives around Bryan. He is a retired CPA. Waller was a Baptist preacher and later was Vice-President of East Texas Baptist College where I attended two years. Elizabeth was a librarian in Huntsville then was the librarian at ETBC. Any relation? 1. [TXHILL] families of Hill Co - Hamilton, Pledger
    2. Dortha F. Greenlee
    3. There is mention of Covington, and I'm wondering if anyone knew where my great grandmother lived. She is buried at Covington, TX and her name was Eliza Abagail HAMILTON Pledger. She was married to Wesley PLEDGER. They came to Hill Co., TX about 1865 from GA. Other Hamiltons and Pledgers traveled with them I understand. Eliza (Jenny) and Wesley were the parents of my grandmother, Eliza Jane (Jenny) Pledger, who married John James (J J) McKinney about 1871, I think in Hill Co. 3. Sorry, I don't know Leta but can look her up for you if you would like. My Puckett & Bostick families lived in Itasca & Covington. Wm Andrew Puckett from Columbia Co AR married Cora Alice Bostick of Covington in late 1800s & they lived their lives in Itasca - Bois d'Arc community. Cora's sister, Bessie, married Charles Edward Ramsey & they lived in Covington. Recently, I spoke with a man who has lived in Itasca all his life & he said that the Ramseys of Covington were cousins to the Pruitts of Itasca. My Ramsey cousin in Covington (who I also just found recently) has no knowledge of any kinship between these 2 families. Any clue on any of these families will be appreciated.
