Hillsboro Reporter Wednesday, January 8, 2003 MINNIE WOOTEN Mrs. Minnie Wooten, 87, of Whitney died Monday, January 6, at a Waco hospital. She was born September 3, 1915 in Clifton, daughter of Richard and Katie Birtle Lee. She grew up in Womack and graduated from Clifton High School. She received a Bachelor degree from Tarleton State University and a Master degree from Baylor University. She married J.T. (Bunk) Wooten in April of 1938. She taught school in Womack, Walling Bend and Whit-ney, retiring from Whitney in 1978. She also worked at the school after retirement. She was a member of Whitney Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma and Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband March 22, 1960; one son, Tom, December 17, 1980; two brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include: one granddaughter, Michelle Marchesani and husband, Vinny, of Arlington; one great-grandson, Andrew Marchesani; one daughter-in-law, Marlene Eubanks of Allen; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Bruce Martin officiating. Burial followed at Bethlehem Cemetery in Whitney. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Cemetery, P.O. Box 234, Whitney 76692; or Kay Thiele Memorial Library, P.O. Texas is great companies like Dell Computer and Compaq. Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops. Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer. Texas is a place where cities shut down for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and NIOSA River Parade in San Antonio. Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities. If it isn't in Texas, you don't need it. No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas. By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, or California, or Maine, and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because we place being a Texan as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. My father Mark (Whitey) Richards was born July 19, 1899 in Itasca to Charles (Charley) & Ada (Connors) Richards. I need some info on Charlie pryor to that time. Were Charlie & Ada married in Hill co? The 1900 census states Charlie was born in TX, but where. Besides my father they also had James (Jim) born 1903, Tinnie (Tina) born 1906 also in TX. then they must have moved to OK where Myrtle was born in 1910,Columbus in 1911 & Marvin born 1917.If any one can help I would be verry greatful. My great grand father, Benjamin Franklin Baker kept a note book during the years of 1891-92. He wrote his address as McGirk, Hill County, Texas. (Can someome tell me about McGirk?) He was 21 years old, he was a traveling salesman and farm worker. There are many pages torn out of the notebook, but I can see that he kept his accounts in it. I am in the process of copying, "decifering" his handwriting, recording the information and then must put the book in good storage as it is crumbling before my very eyes. If any of the following names and information will help anyone, I'll be glad to send you a copy of information. Names he wrote as customers: Leonard Wales Sheldon, (married Lillie Ann Stembridge-Partain) his future Step-father-in-law W.H. Partain, his future brother-in-law John Anderson Baker, his father W. P. Adams, J. H. Hughes, B.T. Babbets, Mary M. Walker-Baker, W.M. Mason, G.W. Wyatt, C. Hait, Eddy N. Heger, D.D. Clark, O?mie Baker, Nolia Smith of Commanche, Ada Broch, Minnie Reed, Ellen West, Mr. Reynolds, J.M. Burrow of Commanche, D.H. Russell, I.T. Cale, ? A. Hudson, N. Baker, J. Smith, Bessie Wyatt, D.G. Hillsboro Reporter Tuesday, December 31, 2002 NORA HALBERT Nora Halbert, 85, of Whitney died Monday, December 30, at her residence. She was born January 26, 1917 in the Prairie Valley community, daughter of the late Joe and Viva Mae Worley Booth. She had been a lifelong resident of Prairie Valley and Whitney and was a member of Towash Baptist Church. She married Calvin Frank-lin Halbert February 9, 1935 in Whitney, and he preceded her in death August 27, 1990. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Booth and Johnny Booth. Survivors include: three sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie Eugene and Kathy Halbert of Franklinton, Louisiana, Jodie Edwin and Darlene Halbert of Whitney and James Marion and Mary Jo Halbert of Waxahachie; two brothers, Marshall Booth and Jodie Booth, both of Whitney; two sisters, Dell Overton and Ann Harvey, both of Whitney; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Rev. Bobby Booth officiating. The following is a lengthy posting, and this may not be quite the appropriate place to offer it, but I thought the following 1860 letter might be of general interest to Hill County researchers: Letter from Elias MacKey (son of Thomas MacKey and Sarah Murphree MacKey Forsythe) of Hill County, TX, to his sister, Mahala MacKey Burns Ellington Gentry Hicks of El Monte, CA (Letter originally passed down to Delilah Blum Gearhart of Amarillo, TX, descendant of Wallace and Elizabeth ("Betsy") MacKey Sevier (sister of Elias and Mahala)) "Hill Co. Texas July the 16th 1860 My dear Sister, It has been some time since I received your kind letter of Nov. the 2nd & I feel ashamed to mention it but business & brotherly love requires me to answer it. Yours found us all well & this leaves all enjoying reasonable health tho there has been some deaths in the family. Since I recd yours Wallis & Betsy lost a little girl this spring & they lost a little boy last summer their too youngest at that time. They now have another girl which was born this spring. A L Foreman was kiled this spring by the Indians near Cora in Comancha Co. Nancy has come to my house to live. She is not in first rate health. I grew up at Barry, Navarro County, Tx. None of the names are familiar to me. Sorry. I just thought you might know Leta. She has taught in Conroe a long time and is probably about ready to retire. I wish I had some information about these families, but I don't. Until I started this research I thought I knew about everyone in Navarro County but discovered I don't know very many people after all. I had a cousin, Elizabeth Wallace, who grew up at Coolidge and married Waller Ethridge who also grew up in that area. They have both died. They have a son named James Thomas Ethridge who lives around Bryan. He is a retired CPA. Waller was a Baptist preacher and later was Vice-President of East Texas Baptist College where I attended two years. Elizabeth was a librarian in Huntsville then was the librarian at ETBC. There is mention of Covington, and I'm wondering if anyone knew where my great grandmother lived. She is buried at Covington, TX and her name was Eliza Abagail HAMILTON Pledger. She was married to Wesley PLEDGER. They came to Hill Co., TX about 1865 from GA. Other Hamiltons and Pledgers traveled with them I understand. Eliza (Jenny) and Wesley were the parents of my grandmother, Eliza Jane (Jenny) Pledger, who married John James (J J) McKinney about 1871, I think in Hill Co.
