Diana, Hope your finals went ok. I was wondering if you had a chance to get a plot map for Ridge Park Cemetery. No hurry, just thought I'd check... The Sanford family, arrived in Hill County in 1854, took the route from New Orleans to Galveston. They came from the Jackson, TN area originally. Rivers and coastal routes were the quickest and safest way to go. I bookmarked a page some time ago. I'll share it with you all. I hope it helps. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~south1/trails1.htm
I certainly don't want to take away from the Hill County mailing list, but there is a mailing list called Southern Trails that discusses the migrations. To subscribe send an email to Southern-Trails-l-request@rootsweb.com with the work subscribe in the subject line and in the body. And ask your question there. There are so good historians on the list. My family traveled from South Carolina to Texas in 1849. I was told by an elderly aunt that they travelled the Trace Trail to Texas. I assume that's the Nachez Trace Trail, but am not for sure. I'll be interested in responses you get & hope they are put on this site.
Shon, There are probably hundreds of books that show this migration route. However, there are several topographic maps that are more interesting. These are available online from several different sources. I have found through my searches, that of the four basic families that make up my main tree, three came through AR, and one through Galveston. Most of these came by way of VA., NC., SC., GA., AL., ARK., then TX. From LA. most that I have traced came through Nacogdoches. Where they started from will determine a lot which way and when they came. At the genealogy Library here in Houston, you can look at these maps and I am sure a lot of libraries have them. Good luck in your journey Butch ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shon Samples" <network.nut@verizon.net> To: <TXHILL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 10, 2003 7:09 AM Subject: [TXHILL] How families migrated to Texas > Does anyone know a good source that talks about the paths that families might have taken when migrating to Texas. Butch, Many. many, thanks for taking the time to try ........... it is sincerely appreciated. Lynette in CA
Hi Janice Technically, I don't come from any Marshall line .......... I am searching for the first wife of my great uncle Ike Spencer. I had such good luck tracking the ancestors of his second wife, also a Marshall, I wanted the history of the first ......... having a few leads, which I have been unable to follow to any conclusion, it has become a mystery to be solved and I am stubbornly trying to solve it. First wife was Minnie Marshall married Isaac Newton Spencer in 1900 Limestone Co., TX, had one child, girl named Arlice (spelling is correct). She was born 14 Jan 1903. Don't know when Minnie died, but was before 1910. I am told she, mother, father and sister are buried in a cemetery near Hillsboro. Was hoping other members of her family might also be buried there and that might give me a lead. The only other facts I have are she was born in Tennessee and either she or Uncle Ike had a cousin named Audley Creech, who was living with them in 1900 (per census). If you are searching for Marshall's in Hill County, perhaps some of this may be of interest to you and we can help each other? Lynette in CA
Lynette-what Marshall Line do you come from? This is to anyone living in the Hill Co. area. While I was doing the Old Woodbury Cemetery for the Hill Co site, I noticed most, if not all of the old monuments were made by the Cameron Monument Works Hillsboro TX. I did not have enough time while there to investigate if the records from this business had been saved. Could someone ask around and find out. If they are available, a lot of missing ancestors could be found. I will not have enough spare time to do it until mid summer. Thanks in advance Butch
