    3. Thank you for the responses. That makes sense - recordings occurred where the person was, not where the land was if they differed. In fact, that means my ancestor was in Milam County at the time she made that 837 sale of the property near what would become Whitney. I always wondered where she was living, so that's a great clue! Thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Bigham" <howbig@attbi.com> To: <TXHILL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 2:12 PM Subject: Re: [TXHILL] Land Records > Deven: > > Land records did not have to be recorded in county sold. 3. Deven: Land records did not have to be recorded in county sold. Since people har to use horse power they went to the County Court House that was the closest to them. This happens often where a plot of land was sold in one county but was regestered in anotheer simply because that courthouse was closer to them. 3. Thanks for the help with the Baylor microfilmed records. Do they have any county records which have not been microfilmed, and can be used only on site? I'm trying to determine if it would be worthwhile to include Baylor as a stop on my trip through the area later this summer. Terry researching Bailey, Paul, Pitts, Solomon, Woody

If you go to <A HREF="http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/index.html">http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/index.html</A> , scroll down to "Local Records", select "Index of County Records on Microfilm", then select "Hill" you will get a list of what microfilm records are available from Baylor University. The Waco-McLennan County Library (Central Library downtown) has a wonderful genealogy collection as well. You can search their card catalog at <A HREF="http://www.waco-texas.com/city_depts/libraryservices/libraryservices.htm"> http://www.waco-texas.com/city_depts/libraryservices/libraryservices.htm</A> . 3. Baylor has some public records in the Texas Collection (254) 710-1268; located on the first floor, Carroll Library, HOURS: M-R 9:00-10:00; F 9:00-5; S 9:00-3:00. This will only be records of people that lived in TX. Moody Library supervisors are in a meeting right now, and the receptionist does not think that Moody has genealogy records. The TX Collection suggested the Waco Public Library (CENTRAL LIBRARY LOCATION 750-5941 PRESS 6) as it has a genealogy section located downstairs. HOURS: M-R 10:00-9:00; FS 10:00-6:00; S 1:00-5:00 Hope this helps, Diana R. Holland

Daughter had severe allergic reaction on Friday, so I pretty much lost my days off. She's still not over it totally. I'm now back in school... and working in the hospitals. Had all B's and A's on first semester... YEAH... Sorry, I don't have better news... Di

    3. Does anyone know if there are any City Directories or Telephone Directories for 1942 to 1950? I am trying to locate some cousins that lived in Hillsboro in 1942 when their half brother passed away. Their names were Josephine BRYAN and Dan BRYAN. Thanks for any help in confirming that they did live in Hillsboro at that time and where they lived. Thanks again. vernon cockerham <butch39@worldnet.att.net> wrote: Looking for info on Georgia Patterson. Lived in Hill CO. in 1886. Had twins born there that year. Husband Wm. 3. The ladies at the county clerks office are very helpful with things like this. If there is a record you might try and find out through them. I recently went through some birth, death, marriage , and old probate records there and they were very helpful to a stranger. 1. [TXHILL] Court Papers: Alf Spears & Hop Spears 1896
    2. I'm wondering if there was any source for court papers in Hillsboro, Hill Co, TX. My grandfather, Alf[red] SPEARS and his brother, Hop SPEARS were arrested by the Sheriff, Tom Bell in Hillsboro, TX. A letter from the Sheriff dated 1 June 1896 was sent to Zachariah LaFever in Hudgens, TN advising that he had in custody Alf Spears and Hop Spears, charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol and that they alleged that they went by the name Spears in TX and LaFever in Tennessee. I'm wondering if Zachariah is my grgrandfather. The Sheriff asked Zachariah LaFever for information on the boys. Unfortunately, we don't have his reply. I am trying to trace further back into the parentage of Alfred Willie Spears b. 11 April 1874 Sparta, White, TN. He is my grandfather. If anyone has any ideas on tracing these court papers, please advise. Thank you, Cindy Spears Faulkner
