    3. The monument that Jackie is talking about was over 6 feet tall and had to weigh a ton. It was still in good condition other than someone took a pickup in there and knocked it over. It jsut needed to be put back upright, but instead it disappeared. Cathy From: "Kissick" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Old Woodbury Cemetery Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 17:13:49 -0800 I too can vouch for some of the vandalizm at the Old Woodbury Cemetery. Last April when I was visiting there Cathy and I went there and discovered a huge upright monument type stone was missing. It had been laying down. It took a lot of effort to remove the stone. I believe it may have been the type the Woodmen used. I do not know who the oldest stone belongs to there, but isn't there something in Texas about a cemetery being so old it can apply for historic recognition and possibly the County will put a fence up. I would think the people that have relatives there would try to get somekind of fence erected that could be locked if necessary. I live 1200+ miles from there but would be willing to lend my support. 3. Could the crack have been made by all the rain we received in January? I live in Navarro CO next door, :) and we had over 5 inches of rain...or could it have been caused by a sun crack from last summer? Surely to God no one is digging up the graves..... How spooky..gives me chills to think about it... I have a police scanner and hear all the time for the police to check out cemeteries in Navarro CO all times of the day and night.. In Ennis they lock the gates at 10 p.m. every night.... A lot of "sick" people on the loose....I know it isn't safe to go and visit your loved ones graves by yourself....to many "live" ones creeping about to harm you. 3. Cemetery desecration and vandalism is rampant all over Texas!!! Every single time I return to a family cemetery, there are new headstones/markers broken or gone completely. There are at least 25 markers in various family cemeteries that were victimized by vandals-all the more reason you should photograph every single one in your family as well as a distance shot to show where the marker is/was!!!! I have been told that the missing markers are used as steps in muddy pasture land - grrrrrrr! Something has got to be done to preserve our old cemeteries!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "cathy shelley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 05, 2001 12:49 PM Subject: Cemetery Horror!!!!! > I went to the Old Woodbury Cemetery over the weekend to do some lookups > for people and the horror I found really leaves me digusted and very > upset!!!!! 3. Hi Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. More than likely if your relatives were buried on their property the Corp didn't know about them and they probably were never taken up and may never be found. I have found that not all bodies were removed from the Cemeteries because the men digging them up were scared and they only took the head stones and left the bodies. I have been told a lot of stories about this and i'm not sure how much is true, but all agree that not all bodies were moved. Cathy From: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Whitney Dam Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 23:16:05 EST My ancestor owned property in the area of Whitney Lake; he died in 1836 and one of his daughters (age 5 in 1835) died shortly thereafter. I suspect they were buried on the property, most of which is now under the lake. I've checked cemetery lists, but they do not appear on the lists. I'm wondering, however, if a map exists showing where burial sites were before the bodies were moved. I'm thinking I might be able to identify currently unidentifed graves in the new cemeteries based upon where the graves were before they were moved. Anyone know of such a map? I've checked with the Corps of Engineers, but they couldn't help. ==== TXHILL Mailing List ==== Website by Debbie: http://homepages.go.com/~disco77/HillTx.html Photosite by Barb: http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293428835 ============================== Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

W. H. Martin At his home, on his farm in Hill county, near Hillsboro, in the 76th year of his eventful life, on Saturday, Feb. 5, 1898, the brave spirit of the loved and honored Wm. Harrison Martin to the country known as Howdy Martin, took its flight from the scenes of life to the Courts above. Major Martin was the son of Robert Martin and Charlotte Martin, of Alabama, and the grandson of Benjamin Harrison on his mothers side. Benjamin Harrison was a member of the convention that framed the Constitution of the State of Georgia, and was a major of great renown in the Revolutionary War. Major Martin was born in Twiggs county, Georgia, Sept. 2, 1822; and in 1835, with his fathers family removed to to Alabama living in that state until he attained manhood, when he moved to the State of Texas, settling in Henderson county in the Spring of 1851, here the most useful and eventful part of his life was passed, removing to Hill County in 1893. He married Miss Martha E. Gallemore of Navarro County Feb. 12, 1867. As a soldier and officer, Major Martin served during the entire war in the Confederate service, beginning his services as Captain of Company K. of the 4th Texas Regiment, Hood's original regiment and at the time of surrender was Lieut. Col. of said regiment. His only and younger brother was Robert Martin and in his company. Robert Martin was killed in Tenn. in battle, fighting by the side of Col. W.H. Martin. He fought in the battles of Elkhorn Landing, Seven Pines, seven days before Richmond. Second battle of Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga. The Wilderness, and all other battles from that time to the end of the war, surrendering with Lee. After the surrender at Appomattox he returned to Henderson county, and began anew his life as a citizen, and engaged again in the practice of his profession, the law, living a quiet life with his family until in 1872, during the 4 days election under the administration of Mr. E.J. Davis, he was elected by his distric to administer the office of Dist. Atty., in the Counties of Kaufman, Henderson, Smith and Anderson, after filling this office with marked ability for two terms, he again retired to private life, and devoted himself to farming pursuits, until he was elected in 1887 to fill the unexpired term in the Congress of United States, made vacant by the election of the Hon. John H. Reagan, of whom Maj. Martin was a life long friend, to a seat in the United States, Senate, where he served his people with much credit and ability in the 50 and 51 Congress. This was not his first Legislative experience, as he was a very able and prominent member of the Senate of Texas a number of years before the war. After the retirement of Major Martin from Congress, he moved with his family to Hill Co. where he lived until his death. He leaves surviving him his wife and seven children, three of whom are happily married, the balance remaining on the homestead with the mother. Jno. S. Jones.
