Hi Diane, Both Towash Cemeteries were moved. One was moved into Whitney and the other one was moved about a mile from Whitney Cemetery. Cathy From: "diane ethridge" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Cemetery... Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 11:03:18 -0600 I looked up the old letter regarding the cemetery in Whitney that was moved & it was the "Towash Cemetery" according to this letter which is very hard to read. The info is in a book (also acc to the letter) "A History Of Hill County" by Ellis Bailey. I was told that the dam was put over an old cemetery. I had an ancestor buried there. I'm going to look up that old letter & see if the cemetery name was mentioned. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 7:08 PM Subject: Cemetery... > At the Hill County WebSite there is a listing of Cemeteries and > individual listings. > One that I was interested in was the DeGraffenried Cemetery. These are some wonderful research sites for TX info that have been very helpful. Have fun. Dorothy http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/service/ http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby/services/indexB.htm
Donna, I copied and pasted the site below. Check it out and it may save you some time. I found it on a list somewhere [Maybe the state gen web site]. anyway the "Texas Adjutant General Service Records, 1836 - 1935." I found Homer Bishop on a list of Military Service Records of Military Org. >From this site you can order records. I called and ordered it. http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/service/ I am going to try to type another site for an index of the military services that I found a several years ago. Hope it still works. This listed all the men and what service they were in. This is the one for names with 'B' http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby/services/indexB.htm If none of this works try to e-mail for help. Dear Dorothy, Homer L. Bishop, b. 1873 AL, m. 1897 (maybe in Johnson Co. TX) Nannie Cavender Crain, a widow with 3 children. Nannie died in Shreveport LA in 1944. Homer survived her, but he may have also died in LA. Does this sound like the fellow you are looking for? I know a lady who is the granddaughter of Nannie. She probably remembers Homer. Let me know. At the Hill County WebSite there is a listing of Cemeteries and individual listings. One that I was interested in was the DeGraffenried Cemetery. Below states its relocation to the Whitney Cemetery, so I would think the Whitney is alive and well...(well maybe not so alive or well...its occuptants...grin). I can't imagine any lake made without relocation of all bodies. Would hate to see them float by! "DeGraffenried Cemetery was in Hill Co. Texas. All the bodies with A (dot) were moved to Whitney Cemetery when the lake was put in." Hope this help and excuse my sense of humor. Have a Great Weekend!
There was a cemetery in Whitney that was covered over by the Whitney Dam & lake. It was very old but wasn't moved, according to what I've been told. For those who look at our Hill Co. Photo site, photo#3 is of a class in about 1908 in Whitney (I'm pretty sure!) It's a huge class, and you can't really see the kids well in the photo posted on this site. But, I do have it broken down into groups, and posted on my own photo site. If you had ancestors that lived in Whitney around 1908, and were of school age, please look at the photo on my other site, and see if you can identify any of your ancestors. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=212255&a=7112824 Let me know if you do! Barbara P.S. We've had a slowdown of folks submitting their photos, etc. for Hill Co. Photo Site. If you have any photos or scans of anything interesting pertaining to Hill Co., please contact me! I'd love to put your stuff up on the site. -- Barbara Craddock Pike To view my family photo albums (past and present): http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=212255 See if you can help me identify some of my "Unknowns"!
