Reed, Mrs. Walton Smith ; Celeste Varnell Dodd, chairman. It was published in 1980. The Dallas library does have this book. 3. Thank you to those who responded to my inquiry as to whether or not there was a Puckett and/or Bostick listed in the book. My aunt, Odessa Puckett, lived on the road between Itasca & Covington, just north of Itasca. Don't think this J.B. Puckett is mine but could be, that's an unusual name. I appreciate your time & trouble to do these look-ups. Diane in Conroe, TX

    3. I have an old letter from an aunt in Itasca that tells of Ellis Bailey coming by that day to interview her for his book. She said in the letter that she had known him all his life. Is there anyone on the list who has this book & can tell me if there is any Puckett/Bostick info in there? If so, I will go into Houston to the Clayton Library & copy those pages, if possible. Thank you, Diane Ethridge

    2. Anyone know if the "Jack Boles" referenced by Ellis Bailey is actually John G. Boiles? The John G. Boiles property was just southwest of Hillsboro and just east of the Thomas McKey/Mackey property. Thomas' daughter, Nancy McKey (b. 1830 AL), was married to a Boiles c. 1846, then married Augustus Foreman 5-3-1849. She had a daughter named Amanda by Boiles in 1846. I haven't been able to find out who the "Boiles" was. Deven Lewis

    2. This issue about Ellis Bailey's book has brought some questions to mind. I have a autographed copy of this book sent to me by Mr. Bailey. He mentions in the book that he took notes over a period of several decades about Hill County pioneers and history. I would strongly suspect he had a lot more info than he was able to put in one book. Would anyone know where these notes might possibly be? Are they in possession of his decendants? Could someone have access to these notes for research? Should anyone have answers to any of these questions, I would really like to hear from them. JOHN STEVENS HOUSTON, TX

    3. Hi, I am new to this list. My mother and her parents were residents of Itasca in Hill County. I am wondering if some one would mind looking to see if there is any mention of any of my relatives who were in Hill County. the last name is Leatherwood my grandfather's first name was Charles Gee his father's first name was James W. I think there were lots of Leatherwoods in the area - all related. I really appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks so much. Nancy K

    3. Thanks to all of you who sent the information on Jonathan Newby, [the very short mention of him in Bailey's book.] Saved me some bucks. I would like to contact someone who lives in Hill County who might be able to do some research for me at the courthouse. I would like to find the record for the trial that was suppose to have been held for my grandfather who took revenge on the slave who killed my great grandfather. Anyone out there willing to take this on? Again thanks to all of you for info on Jonathan. Sug >

    2. The only mention of NEWBY in Bailey's book is as follows on Page 28: Jonathan Newby (who was killed by one of his slaves) lived on the west side of Hackberry Creek south of Hillsboro. John McKoy lived south of Mr. Newby and near his place the last buffalo was reported to have been killed. Some say this was in 1852 - it is possible that the last one killed in those parts was in 1852, but I have records of an old buffalo that was almost blind being killed in the cross timbers near the Brazos River in the early 1870s. West of Mr. Newby on Jack's Branch was where Jack Bolies located (Jack's Branch was named for Mr. Boles.)

    3. Hey this is fun! Did you know that Jonahs wives were cousins? Toxie Tennessee Myers and Leah Williams were cousins. Just found that out, not too long ago myself. On my Moms side, two sisters from one family, married two brothers from another. People didn't travel like they do today. This used to be a common place occurance. I have been in contact with Uncle Jim and wife Cathy recently. However, Billie Louise has chosen to keep to herself. I hear she is busy with kids and grandkids. Who can I tell Uncle Jim you are related thru? Will he recognize the name Kissick? Thanks, Deanna
