    3. I want more info. on what happened to Mary Brooks Cunningham after she divorced Dan Cunningham in 1913. The boy, Joseph Marion, went to his dad and the girls, Elsie and Lucretia, went to their mom. Joseph ended up in California. I have nothing on the girls. They later in life ended up with a half-brother Morris Cunningham, whose mother was Dan's 2nd wife Beulah Pledger. I figured is some Brooks' are out there she may be a distant aunt or cousin. Just curious. 3. Hi, I am fairly new, though I did post my Leatherwood line in the beginning. I am looking for two men that have had me stumped for a LONG time: Joseph Stilwell - my ggrandfather who may have lived in late life in/near Itasca where is daughter, Inez stilwell Leatherwood lived w/ her spouse, Charles Gee and two girl children. I am looking for his birth place. Jesse Leatherwood who came to TX, Hill Cty, I think w/ his children and grandchildren. One of which was Charles Gee (grandchild of Jesse). I am also looking for his birth place. I have corresponded w/ several cousins, also gggrandchildren of Jesse L. who also have been stuck w/o finding a definite birthplace and names of parents. Thanks for any help. I'll be glad to share whatever I can as well. Nancy K

    3. I have heard of this. We work ourselves to the bone, suffer aggrivation at dead ends, etc. and they get paid for it. The oughta make everything accessible to us without no fees at least. Geez. 2. Barbara, Your comments about putting your genealogy info on the web was right on. I do my own research at libraries, research centers, or on the Internet and have never purchased any of the CD's from FTM. I know they make money off other folks research, but at the same time I am using a free web site provided by them which is easy to use for those of us who are not webmasters. When I started doing this Internet genealogy "hobby" five years ago, I had a total of three cousins whom I knew personally. Today, thanks to Rootsweb, FTM, and many other sites, I now correspond with almost 40 cousins all across the nation who descended from my earliest known ancestors in NC . We had our first Reunion last year in East Texas with 45 in attendance. June 2 of this year we will have our second Reunion in NC and cousins are coming from all over the U.S. to attend. I think I have gotten my money's worth. John Stevens

    3. Amen, John! I consider my "research" a gift to others as well as myself. I have benefitted from other's generosity & don't mind when it's the other way around. Some folks need to have real problems to worry about - this is nonsense & takes the fun out of this hobby. 3. It's the rookie that falls into the trap. After getting bit a few times by their software you learn. Maybe other will see this and not be suckered into wasting money. Rich Brannan -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Pike [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 10:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Photo site (Stevens Family of Hill Co) James, and all... I have heard that ftm does something like this... I have never understood why *anyone* would purchase the stuff from FTM, when it is just a collection of files submitted by people.. most of the info that you can get for free on rootsweb or by querying on message forums, etc. Whenever you gather data like this, you should always "take it with a grain of salt"...and try to confirm sources, etc. I have my gedcom on rootsweb world connect. I also have a family tree maker homepage. As far as others profitting from my hard work.... well... if the only way that I can keep that from happening, is not putting what I have found out there, for others to find me... then, for me, it's an acceptable trade off. I gave found many cousins, and many have found me, because when they do a search, they find me from what I have put out there on the web. I guess if I was a hardcore researcher, who had personally documented every bit of the data that I had... had spent years in courthouses and libraries.... then I would feel differently. I would be more "possessive" or protective of my hard work... and probably publish a book. But, much of what I have gathered, I have gathered off the web, from others; from world connect, from message forums, from ftm, from ancestry.com. I am sure that I have some erroneous info...and I have that on my gedcom...that you should try to verify the info yourself. I have tried with my most direct lines, to find sources and documentation (and direct descendants) that can verify or confirm what I have gathered. I also have on my gedcom a request that if you know of any additions or corrections to my "work" that you notify me. I don't want to knowingly publish incorrect data... So, in this age of computers... it must be a decision we have to make. When you put something on the web, it's out there for people to "steal". If what you have is something that you don't want "stolen", then you shouldn't put it out there.
