As a genealogist I'm always posting articles on others, then it dawned-on-me .... why not post imformation about my family too? Therefore to make a permament record, here is the newspaper article of the accident that took my fathers life: CANTON HERALD, 19 JAN 1967 THREE ARE KILLED FRIDAY NIGHT IN FIREY CRASH ON HIGHWAY 19 A Canton man was killed Friday night, January 13, in a firey crash that took the lives of three men and injured two. Charles Ward, 23, died at the scene of the three-vehicle accident which occurred about 6:30p.m. about 6 miles north of Athens on Highway 19. Also killed was Porter Henderson, a Negro, of Athens, 79, and Teddy Buford of the Bethel Community, a 16 year old high school sophmore student at Athens. Injured were Mrs. Lois Craig Harris, 36, and Buford's brother, Jimmy Carrolll Buford, 23, who suffered a fractured skull and severe lacerations of the head. Mrs. Harris was treated at an Athens hospital and released. According to a report of Highway Patrolman, K.C. Winn of Athens, the accident occurred when a car attempted to pass a pickup truck but collided head-on with an oncoming truck. The truck was occupied by WARD and HENDERSON and burst into flames. Officers said the bodies of the two men were charred by the blaze. Officers said the accident occured in a heavy fog! on rain slick pavement. The car crashed into the rear of the pickup at the same time it hit the other truck head-on according to the investigating officers. Mrs. Harris was the driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck. *********************************************** Funeral Services for Charles Roland Ward, 23, were held Sunday afternoon, January 15 at 1 o'clock at Eubank Funeral Chapel. Rev. Louie Barron and Rev. Charles Richardson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Haven of Memories under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home. A native of Van Zandt County, Mr. Ward was a member of the China Grove Baptist Church and Castillian Lodge No. 141. He was a 1961 graduate of Canton High School. He was a broker of farm and ranch supplies. Pallbearers were Bob Johnson, Jack Daniel, Lloyd Mewbourn, Jack Mewbourn, Jerry Gandy and Dennis Daniel. Survivors include his wife, and two children Melanie and Charles Jr of Canton, his parents Mr. & Mrs. Walter Ward, a brother BW Ward of Canton and 4 sisters Mrs. Merle Dunn, Mrs. Izora Williams, Mrs. Lavona Albright and Mrs. Shirley Ramsey. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A NOTE FROM THE DAUGHTER ... if anyone knows the survivors of this accident, please pass a message on to them for me ... please tell them there are no hard feelings whatsoever. Please let their hearts be free. I've tried in the past to contact them with no success. It's important to me, for them to know that the door is always open and that there are no hard feelings.
