Hi All, Just wanted to do a little bit of bragging about our genealogy society - East Texas Genealogical Society. ETGS represents 6 counties - Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith. We recently were the local hosts for the Texas State Genealogical Society Annual Conference in Tyler. We also participated in their writing contests. Our newsletter was voted 2nd place in the state losing out to Dallas Genealogical Society for 1st. Our newsletter editor Pat Galloway really deserved this award for her hard work in getting out a monthly newsletter on time with a lot of information included. We also won an 2nd place for quarterly - East Texas Family Records. This was done with a lot of hard work from our editior June Everheart and former editior Martha Glover. Also a lot of hard work was put in by our county representatives including Estelle Corder for Anderson & Henderson Counties, Nancy Crain for Gregg County, Geraldine Graves for Panola County, John Dulin for Rusk Co! unty, Mary Love Berryman for Smith County and our newest rep for Anderson County - Mike Vaughn. For Henderson County we published the following articles: School Teacher Vouchers Petitions to Commissioners Court List of Road Workers Settlers - J. C. Dunn Survey Bank of LaRue Investors - 1911 Settlers of B. F. Higgins Survey William Perkins Civil War Letter Perkins Family LaRue Family Bible List of Road Workes - 1871 Request for Road Extension Petition for Election to Determine Whether to Levy Tax Petition for a New Road Request for Road Extension 1935 Athens Citizen Directory We also published an article on the 7th Texas Infantry Buried at Hopkinsville, Kentucky. This included men from McLennan, Freestone, Kaufman, Cherokee, Smith, Rusk, Harrison and Upshur counties. For next year, I do know that Estelle Corder will be continuing the 1935 Athens Citizen Directory information among other things. We always welcome any articles about Henderson County families, genealogy or history. Estelle or June Everheart will be glad to work with you. We are also planning a special meeting at the Palestine Public Library on March 30, 2002 from 2 p.m. to about 4 p.m. We are also co-hosting a free seminar with the Tyler Family History Center on March 23. We will have several speakers on various topics. This will be our 2nd year to do this. We are also going to have Don Raney do a full day seminar on July 13. If you have not heard Don speak, he is an excellent speaker. The cost will most likely be around $25. I am also in the process of getting another special meeting together in Carthage hopefully in August. Still need to confirm this. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Scott Fitzgerald, President of ETGS
