    1. [TXHENDER-L] Berry Cemetery
    2. The Berry Cemetery is located on a game preserve previously owned by Faye Bateman Magahan (daughter of William Porter Bateman) and willed to the State of Texas. Faye and her husband (Vernon Magahan) are buried in the small cemetery on the property which is located a few yards northwest of the Magahan homeplace. The property is leased to an unknown gentleman who keeps cows there. He has a combination lock on the main gate at the road. Stop anywhere in the Styx community and ask for Margie Godwin. She can give you directions to Berry cemetery and instructions about the lock. Margie Godwin makes arrangements for the upkeep of the cemetery and others in the area. I visited the cemetery this year after a large rain. If you decide to visit, either go when it is very dry or prepare to walk the long road to the site. I would like to mention that William Porter Bateman is my ggrandfather. If you have time during your visit, take a hike through the wooded area just north of the house. You might get lucky and find the old wagon tracks which led to the river and the site where ggrandad Bateman ran a ferry crossing (Porter's Bluff) which would be where hwy 85 crosses the Trinity river. Berry cemetery is located south of the Styx community near the intersecton of hwy 85 and fm road 2613. Good luck with your research. Jerry Bateman ([email protected])
