I don't know about it being obviously Malakoff. On the other side of the county is a little town named Opelika. My father was born there, as his father before him, and his father before him. This family was listed in 1860 census at Malaki and I always assumed (always gets me in trouble) being Opelika. My dad didn't pronounce it as it looks. He always called it "Op a lack e". The family in 1870 census just showed it as Precinct #2. Do you know where Precinct #2 is? This might give more substance to making Malaki & Malakoff the same. This family married a lady from Malakoff. So either place works for me.
