I am hoping someone familiar with Henderson County's old records will be able to shed some light on the following: There is a ledger in the District Clerk's records room (on the third floor of courthouse) titled "Document File Number Index #1". When the clerk's staff went to the old jail to retrieve the documents I had requested from this index, they were not found. However, "Document File Number Index #2" has the same numbers and these documents were found. The indexes give no clue as to the dates of these documents but #1 appears to include records from around the early 1900s and #2 appears to be from the mid 1900s. I'm told that all documents are filed by document number only, box numbers listed in the indexes have nothing to do with the way these papers are filed. Does anyone know what may have become of the documents from Index #1? Since I'm looking for a divorce, are there other places to look between 1900-1905? I'm also looking for any surviving newspapers printed in or around Eustace prior to WWII. Thank you, Janet Cook
I'll ask around about the District Clerk Records, but as far as the newspapers.... An enterprising young man has published an index (of which I just happen to have a copy of) to the weekly edition of the Athens Daily Review. It has quite a bit of info, but is also lacking in other areas. What names are you researching? I'll check the index for you.
