The marriage book that I have says Henderson Co. was created from Nacogdoches and Houston Counties on April 27, 1846 by an act of the TX legislature, it encompassed what is now Henderson, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Wood, Rockwall, and most of Rains Co. It was finally reduced to its present size on Jan. 28, 1850. Its first Co. seat was Buffalo, then Centerville, and finally Athens. I don't know when the courthouse was built, but I believe I read somewhere that there were 3 different courthouses in Athens. According to J. J. Faulk's History of Henderson County published in 1929, the first marriage license was issued at Buffalo on Sept. 16, 1846.
