    1. ETGS Seminar, Sept. 9th
    2. Scott Fitzgerald
    3. TREVIA WOOSTER BEVERLY FEATURED SPEAKER AT ETGS SEMINAR The East Texas Genealogical Society will conduct an all-day seminar with Trevia Wooster Beverly as our featured speaker on Saturday, September 9th, at the Smith County Historical Society Auditorium (Old Carnegie Library across from Tyler Public Library), 125 South College, Tyler, Texas in the 2nd Floor Auditorium (903) 592-5993. Ms. Beverly is a professional genealogist, amateur historian, cemetery preservationist, speaker and workshop leader, writer, publisher and book reviewer. She is well known as an outstanding speaker and we are pleased that he will be conducting the following sessions during our seminar: Gateway to History: Tennessee Research; Getting Your Family Research into Print; Special Texas Collections; and Research in the Clayton Library. The topic "Gateway to History: Tennessee Research" will tell how Tennessee stood on the western frontier of the new nation in the late 18th century. Divided into three distinct geographical areas, people still tend to say that they are from a specific area: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee or West Tennessee. Its nickname of The Volunteer State reflects the readiness with which ordinary citizens rallied to the call to arms. The gun - the Bible - themselves, have set their way. Be they the Scotch-Irish or the tri-racial Melungeons, the search for Tennessee family is an adventure. In the topic "Getting Your Family Research into Print" we can start with a framework and build on it from all sides, and come up with a truly beautiful picture of our family and the role they played in building the future. Self-publish or Publish-on-Demand, a full-fledged book, family newsletters, vignettes, compilation of charts and records - the field is wide open - and you can show off your research skill, your artistic nature, and your love of family! In the "Special Texas Collections" topic, Ms. Beverly shows that they are many and varied collections but will concentrate on three: The Béxar Archives, the Nacogdoches Archives, and the R. B. Black Collection. Texas has existed as a part of the U.S. for over 160 years, but the archival legacy extends back over twice that number of years. All too often we pigeonhole a group of records without realizing their vastness in family and territory. While we think of these as "Texas Collections" but they encompass "the Americans" and the foreign born, many who came to Texas and many who did not. And in the final topic, Ms. Beverly will show us how to "Research in the Clayton Library" Clayton is one of the nation's premier genealogical collections. One of the 'top five' genealogical collections in the U.S., this 'jewel in the crown' of the Houston Public Library system has materials from every state, most foreign countries, and has many special collections, as well as the most complete set of census records outside the National Archives' Regional Branch in Fort Worth. This session will give you the basic tools to make your visit more successful, and take you into all the 'nooks & crannies' of this research facility. Ms. Beverly's current active memberships include the Association of Professional Genealogists, Genealogical Speaker's Guild, Association for Gravestone Studies, Save Texas Cemeteries and many others. She is a native of Harris County, born and reared in the community of Wooster, which was founded by her great-grandfather. Her interest in genealogy began with a 9th grade English project and have since traced her paternal line and that of her husband to England in the early 1600s. She has also traced her mother's Acadian family from France to Canada, through the British dispersement back to France and into Louisiana in 1785. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. The seminar will be from 9:00 until 3:30 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person if registered before September 1st, or $30.00 per person after September 1st. Participants may order a box lunch if ordered by September 1st, bring their own lunch or plan to eat at nearby restaurants. Soft drinks and light snacks will be provided. [At this moment walk-in registrations will be allowed, but because of limited seating we may change this depending on pre-registrations received.] Visit our Web site at www.rootsweb.com/txetgs/meetings to print a registration form. Or, call Scott at 903-592-6576 during the day or 597-7865 at night, or send an e-mail to scottfitzgerald@tyler.net for more information.

    3. I attended thee Fincastle Cemetery meeting last Sunday and it was a good meeting with about 30 in attendance. It seems someone had a Hughes family marker for an ancestor placed but it was set in another families area on a spot one of the attendees considered his place. The Hughes were buried further from the drive and evidently who ever set the marker Possibly the Monument Company decided to just place it from where the truck could get to. If anyone knows who placed the marker it needs to be relocated to the Hughes Family area where the person is most likely actually buried. Also the state historical sign had been partially broken with a large piece broken off. A cousin who was at Myrtle Springs about 4 miles west emailed me that the state marker there was also damaged with a large piece broken off in a similar way. I was at Myrtle Springs in May and believe the marker was intact then as I do not remember seeing it broken. Fincastle is out of the way and hard to see from the road so it would have to be someone with a knowledge of the area. Also the road to Myrtle Springs is not marked that there is a cemetery on it and it is a bumpy narrow road. 3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, August 12, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Paula Perkins Program: "Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Finding Your Newsworthy (& not so newsworthy) Ancestors Through Newspaper Research" Looking for birth, death, marriage, divorce, shipping lists, train routes, murder & mayhem? Secular and denominational newspapers have been microfilmed from across the United States and available through interlibrary loan and many have been digitalized. State and Local newspapers are archiving and digitalizing their newspapers and have searchable indexes to their databases online. These include wedding announcements, birth, obits, anniversary milestones of ministers and the list goes on. Both printed and online indexes will help guide you to newspapers and locations of where the newspaper can be found. Come find how to locate newspapers around the country locally to assist you in your genealogical pursuits of putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Paula is a native Texan with over 25 years of genealogical experience in research, speaking and teaching on the subject of family history. Her grandmother and parents assisted in promoting her interest in genealogy when she was a child by taking her to visit all the "older" members of the family. In addition her maternal "Granny", that lived just shy of 100 years old, was the family historian for her family and her husband's family. She collected a large amount of material on the family and educated Paula on all of branches of the "family tree." Paula has been the guest speaker/instructor at universities, spoken to genealogical and historical groups in several states and served on the board for several local genealogical societies. Paula was the Dallas PBS television station's Coordinator for the Family History Community Outreach program in conjunction with the "Ancestor" series. She is presently the Vice President of the Collin County Genealogical Society and Registrar for the society's Pioneer First Families of Collin County project and Federation of Genealogical Societies delegate. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Beverly Bailey Odom will lead a round table discussion on "Basic Computer Tasks." At 10 a.m. that morning ETGS will also sponsor a "Junior Genealogy Class" featuring Frances Grochowski.
