Here is the web site for Texas History on line: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/BB/hnb71.html that gives some history of the community. We were raised in that area, and know a little of the history. The Bradford family moved to Palestine and ran a grocery store. Some of the people from Springfield; which was the community just to the west, may have stayed with the Bradford family and went to a teachers school. Possibly we may have a pictures with some of the Bradford family in the group. Reply to me directly, and we will see what we can find. Thanks. It used to be $9 or $11 but in January this year went to $23 I believe. However many larger Libraries have them on microfilm. Fort Worth to 1940 at this time Dallas to 1999. Copies from microfilm are 25 cents. We spent several days in Dallas recently and obtained around 100 of them, some have wonderful information some do not it depends on who provided the information and how well it was copied to the certificate, but for the cost of one certificate we have 100 but it also took several days of time. If you want to do this the best way is to copy surnames from the index rolls and take them home and decide which ones are important. then come back with the information organized by year and certificate number. We went together and I loaded the copy machine and made copies and Jo Ann brought the rolls since one person can only use one roll at a time we each signed up and she was able to bring me a roll as I was finishing copying the previous one doing it that way we could do about 15 copies an hour. The certificates are in several indexes by groups of years and then the later post 197? are individual years without an index so you must know the death date and then it takes some time as the counties send them in in groups and they are assigned numbers so you might need to look at a lot to be sure of finding the one you need. Unfortunately the early years may not be complete as some counties did not do a good job of forwarding information to the state. In that case either pay by mail or go and look. We found that some counties would let us look at the certificate in order to be sure it was the correct person but this was just for a few and it seemed that only in smaller counties would they allow this. We could note information to make sure it was correct and then we did not need the certificate we had the data and the number. It seemed also that ease of access to records was in proportion to the staff. Small counties that could not afford a lot of staff allowed more access than larger counties with a larger staff. Specifically, I am curious about who I believe was his second wife, widow Amanda J Edwards. They possibly married in the late 1870's after the deaths of first spouses. In the 1880 census of Henderson County Tx. the J Hugh Killingsworth household included two stepchildren, male Drew (5) and female "Lackey Bee" (7/12). Could this mean they were both the children of Amanda by her first husband James T. Edwards? Apparently, John Hugh went on to have at least four wives (and maybe more).
