And do come to the community meetings if you can! http://www.nccountyheritage.com/ TransylvanCoGenList the Transylvania Genealogy Group is excited to announce the formal kick-off of the new heritage book for Transylvania County. A new history of the county is long overdue! In the ten years that have passed since the first book was published in 1995, a mountain of quality research has greatly expanded knowledge of our families and the general history of the county. While the first book was quite good, today we have the ability to create a fabulous work of family and general county history that greatly eclipses the successes of volume I -- expanding and even correcting data in the first volume. The Transylvania Genealogy Group is delighted for the opportunity to lead in creating this new county history and actively seeks the involvement, participation, and support of the entire community, including descendants of Transylvania County families spread across the nation today. Everyone is strongly encouraged to participate! On Monday, October 16 the community-wide heritage book informational meetings begin in downtown Brevard at the Chamber of Commerce building at 35 West Main Street. Our publisher, Don Mills of County Heritage Inc./Walsworth Publishing, will conduct the meetings. For convenience, we'll hold the first meeting at 1:00 p.m. and the second at 6:00 p.m., allowing everyone to get in on the meetings that are sure to be well attended. The meetings will provide everything needed to get started compiling and writing articles. Printed materials will be given out. All individuals, families, churches, schools, organizations, institutions, and even businesses in the county are invited to attend to learn how to participate. The Transylvania Genealogy Group has just opened the heritage book website where you can download a PDF version of the book project brochure that includes everything you need to get started, including sample articles, an order form to buy a book, and a submission form to turn in your article(s). Please visit the Transylvania Genealogy Group's heritage book website at: http://www.nccountyheritage.com/ to learn all about this project. And do come to the community meetings if you can! For more information about the book project, contact chairman Michael Allison at dma12@bellsouth.net Don't miss this priceless opportunity to create a lasting memorials to your ancestors and family! Insure that your family is given its rightful place in local history and is remembered for all time through the permanence of the printed word.

    1. [TXHENDER] James Alexander Porter descendants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Porter, Morrison, McGlothlin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4kB.2ACI/1929 Message Board Post: I am interested in locating descendants of James Alexander Porter, born 1825 in Perry County, AL, who moved from Winston County, MS, to Henderson County, TX, in 1865. He was the second son of Andrew Walker Porter (1802-1866) and Mary McKee Morrison Porter (1802-1874) who married in 1823 in Mecklenburg County, NC. The family moved to Perry County, AL, in the 1820s and to Winston County, MS, in the 1830s. James A. Porter’s uncle and aunt Henry Downs Morrison (1804-1874) and Jane M. Porter Morrison (1805-1872) who also married in 1823 in Mecklenburg County had moved to AL in the 1820s and to Henderson County, TX, in the 1850s. James Alexander Porter’s first wife Louisa K. Strother Porter died in 1856, shortly after giving birth to her only child, a daughter Mary “Mollie” Louisa Porter. Louisa Strother Porter was buried in the family cemetery on the farm of Andrew Walker Porter in northern Winston County, and Mollie was raised by her Porter grandparents. James A. Porter remarried and was the father of two sons Neal and Mack by the beginning of the Civil War. He first enlisted in 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant in the “Winston Brothers,” Captain Halfacre’s Company of Patton’s 1st Mississippi Regiment, Infantry. He later served as Captain of a company of State Troops that he formed, “Captain Porter’s Company,” Company F of Robinson’s 5th Mississippi Regiment, Infantry. Shortly after the Civil War ended in 1865, James Alexander Porter moved his family to Henderson County, TX. He and his second wife Mary were listed on the 1870 census with five children: Neal, Mack, John F., William D., and Emma F. The youngest child was aged four and was the only one born in Texas. Later children were Ella S. (born 1871) and Henry W. (born 1875). The four youngest children – William, Emma, Ella, and Henry – were listed on the 1880 census in the household of Smith and Catherine McGlothlin (household 117/122 of Precinct 4 on page 165A). The children’s relationship to the McGlothlins was stated as “cousin.” The second son Mack Porter was listed as a single person, aged 20, living alone in household 14/14 of Precinct 4 on page 159B. I find no listing in the 1880 Henderson County census of the oldest son Neal, who would be 22, the third son John F., who would be 18, or the father James A. and the mother Mary. James A. Porter apparently died in the mid to late 1870s. A Morrison cousin, Sheriff Neal Morrison of Kiowa County, OK, wrote in a 1903 letter to William Walker Porter in Winston County, MS, that James A. Porter, who “came to Texas when we did died at Athens Henderson Co Tex. long ago. 2 of his sons Mack and Neal Porter is in Texas some where married. I have lost trace of them entirely.” William Walker Porter in the early 1900s recorded the name of a Henry McGlothlin of Athens in some of his notes. If he corresponded with this Henry, the letters have not survived in the family papers. Does anyone have further information on this James A. Porter or any of his family in Henderson County? We have a Porter family reunion in Mississippi at two year intervals and are interested in locating his descendants. Thanks for any assistance. Billy Weeks
