Hello, I am researching a newfound branch of the family. Our grandfather is William Hughes Spicer (b. 1902). He lists his father as Walter Henry Spicer and his mother as Ada Dahl. I found a Walter William Henry Spicer coming in at Ellis Island in 1919, age 38, listing his relative as "sister Ada Spicer, GPO Los Angeles, CA" I guessed that he was ours and he was lying about the sister part but could he be yours instead? Does your information match ours at all? If so I am very interested in anything you could tell me. Thank you very much.
Hi what can you tell me about your research for the Hurbrough name. It used to be Hurbough, without the "r") until my Grandmother changed it about the 1920's, as back then they said Hur-bough meant her boyfriend and she didn't like all of the name calling, etc. (lol). Anyway, aren't a whole lot of us around, although I am repopulating! I know most of my ancestors started around Harrison County, Ill, and moved to East Texas somewhere around mid 1850s. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
Sorry Marty I misread your name I guess I should put my glasses on.
Mary Carter I saw your post dated March 2001. Was your Nancy married to Wellington Ribble who owned a dairy in Elizabeth? Thanks
I'm Kyle Hawkins (MO), son of Fred H (AZ), son of Stanley H (TX). son of Stephen H.(TX), son of Albert Pierce or Pearce Hawkins b. 12-25-1853 in Independence County Arkansas. His father is a mystery. Please help me figure him out. In 1861, he is listed in the Henderson County, Texas Census as follows: Stephen Hawkins, 33, farmer, b. Tennessee (TN). Living with his wife, Sarah M. Hawkins, age 29, b. Illinois (IL). 4 kids listed. Marion C. Hawkins, age 9, born Texas (TX), Albert P. Hawkins (my ancestor) age 8, b. Arkansas (AR), Henry M. Hawkins, age 3 b. Arkansas, and Martha Hawkins, age 2 months, b. Arkansas. Here is where the mystery begins..... In 1850, for the census of Independence County Arkansas (where Albert P was born....) Stephen Hawkins, age 24, a farmer, (still b TN) and his wife Sarah M, age 22 (but she's 29 ten years later..... go figure) (still b. IL) are living with 2 very unlikely people...... Anna Hawkins, age 64, b. North Carolina (NC) (I would go so far as to guess that this is his mother? If so, born when she was 40, he would likely be the youngest child?) She COULD be his grandmother or aunt...... who's to say. The other person he is living with is one William J. Barnhill.... a 12 year old boy born in Mississippi. Is any of this making sense to anyone else? OK so the mysteries are..... Who's this kid - is he related or not. How is the older lady related to Stephen, and how old is Stephen's wife? This is all the information I have on my family. If ANYONE can shed any light on them or can plug them into any of their families PLEASE let me know. I can trace so many of my family branches back into Europe, but the one branch of my family where I get my last name has been such a struggle for me to get any information on..... I am searching for descendants of Dewey Parker and wife and their son Walter Bishop Parker. All are deceased, Walter Sr. has a son Walter Bishop Parker Jr. whose last known residence was Eustace. Dewey Parker's parents were Arlington Keloe Parker who died in 1925 in Kaufman Co. and mother was Rosa Bell McMillan who died in 1951 in Dallas Co. Rosa is the sister of my gg grand mother Mary Jane McMillan who married William Samuel Porter Craig. If any one knows the whereabouts of Walter Jr. please contact me. [email protected]
Someone recently mentioned NATIONS. I have a NATIONS in my tree. A Jim Nations. I know nothing of him other than he was once married to my gramma. They lived in Athens, Texas. And he was a Mason. I believe he was married before my gramma, and may of had children. I do know he was married after my gramma, as he ran off with another woman. A Mattie ? Lana
Interested in the identity of the PHOEBE ANGLIN in 1850 and 1860 census with Andrian Anglin. They are also buried together in Asbury Cemetery, Van Zandt Co. Cemetery listing shows her to be Phoebe Parker. Which Phoebe Parker? The Anglin brothers came to Texas from Illinois with the Parkers. Researchers suggest that Phoebe Parker, dau of "Elder" John Parker, widow of Zacarias Hassell, is the Phoebe Parker that married Andrian Anglin. Do you have information?
I don't know about it being obviously Malakoff. On the other side of the county is a little town named Opelika. My father was born there, as his father before him, and his father before him. This family was listed in 1860 census at Malaki and I always assumed (always gets me in trouble) being Opelika. My dad didn't pronounce it as it looks. He always called it "Op a lack e". The family in 1870 census just showed it as Precinct #2. Do you know where Precinct #2 is? This might give more substance to making Malaki & Malakoff the same. This family married a lady from Malakoff. So either place works for me. Currently researching SLIDER & JONES families in Athens ca. 1870 and 1880. The husband, who is never included in the census record, was Richard or William SLIDER. According to later granddaughter he was shot at his front door ca. 1870 in front of the family. His wife Nancy Ann JONES ("Ann Slider") remarries S. MARTIN 12 Mar 1874. S. MARTIN is also shot "in similar circumstances" soon after. The reasons/murderer are unknown. SLIDER family probably associated with early SLIDER family in Gilmer, Upshur co, TX. Quite possible that Richard SLIDER was a wagoner so I wonder if the 2nd husband S.MARTIN is the wagoner "SMALLARD MARTIN" b. ca. 1824 SC in the Henderson co, 1870 census. Wife Nancy Ann appears to be living next to her JONES family in 1870. She supposedly married Richard SLIDER in Upshur 1856. In 1870 census, the Mother is Margrett JONES. Francis JONES marries A.P. HAWKINS in 1872. Emily R. JONES marries Rufus KNOWING 1874. I don't know what happens to the George W. JONES of this family. Any and all help finding pieces to this puzzle appreciated.
Thanks to all who replied. I, too, thought it might be Malakoff. Seems the only obvious name it could be. Kathryn
Hi Janice, Maybe your sisters remember my cousins (Yvonne Bateman/Alton Bateman). They were pretty young back then but they went to gradeschool in Dawson. I believe my older brother (Coan Bateman) also went to gradeschool in Dawson (1946-1948 I think). I am researching: Bateman, Denton, Boone/Boon, Fortner, Dill, Lockwood from Henderson, Kaufman, Navarro and Van Zandt counties. Nice hearing from you. Good luck with your research. Jerry Bateman Forney, TX
I see that someone beat me to answering where Dawson is located. I might mention that it is very close to Corsicana, TX, which is the county seat of Navarro County. Lots of native Americans were there long ago. I lived there for two years in the late 1940s about a mile from my uncle Leslie Bateman. My cousin was always finding a lot of arrowheads in the area. Dawson is listed in The Handbook of Texas ONLINE. Didn't mean to ramble on but, it brought back a lot of memories. Good searching to you! Jerry Bateman Forney, TX
Hi Jerry, I live in Corsicana :) and was born in Hubbard TX just a hop and skip from Dawson....my sisters went to grade school in Dawson in 1945....the year I was born... My husband and I rode out that way one day, years ago and they have a historial marker along the highway where some Native Americans were killed or could have been who they killed...old age setting in, can't remember who was killed. But there is a marker. Would like to go back again...maybe when the weather cools. My names I am searching are: MARSHALL/HAWKINS/MUSICK/ALEXANDER/DENSON from Smith, Cherokee, Henderson, Navarro Counties... Hi Brenda, Dawson is in Navarro County, West of Henderson CO on highway 31... You didn't say what date, so at the time of the documents, it could have listed Henderson as county instead of Navarro.....hope this helps. Of course, on the other hand there may have been a town onced called Dawson in Henderson CO...I don't know for sure. Hello! Does anyone know where the city of Dawson is in Henderson Co? I ran across it in some old H.C. Courthouse records. Thanks! Brenda
