A Richmond McManus of Ellisville Jones Co. (orig. SC) moved to that area of TX. He had a SC sister named Arzilla "Arzy" who never left SC. He named a dau after her. The dau md, named her child Arzy and then both Arzys, mother and dau , died soon after and are buried near Lufkin. I think the Henderson McManuses started with Joab who is a descendant of the Lawrence McManus/Cattrol MCCollin line of NC - TN - etc. I don't think my line in SC connects w/ Lawrences and wanted to let you know about the name "Arzy" and that it is found in both separate lines. Happy hunting, hope I haven't bored you. Barbara
I have added 2 school pictures to the Henderson Co. website, I received them 2 or 3 years ago. I don't know who they are from, if these are yours please let me know. You can access them through: What's New for November 2001 Henderson Co.. TX < http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhender/newNov01.htm> I have also added some community news from 1913, if this interest anyone I will try and add more. (let me know privately) The way I see it, the names of the people listed shows that they were in the county at that time, sometimes they even list that they went to back to their family homes in Timbuktu, it gives you a different place to search. Thanks to everyone who has sent in your Pioneer Families History and Surnames or has contributed in some other way!!!! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4kB.2ACI/1472 Message Board Post: For most of my 58 years I have heard my Bateman family members speak of Porter's Bluff on the Trinity river near Styx, TX. They all attest to the fact that my ggrandfather William Porter Bateman ran a ferrycrossing north of his homeplace (just north of the Berry cemetery) on the Trinity river. Recently I researched Porter's Bluff in The Handbook of Texas Online. There it stated that the bluff was located on the Trinity river near Trinidad, TX in Navarro county and was named after a Capt. Porter Bateman who navigated the Trinity with small cargo boats. It also stated that the entire location of Porter's Bluff was wiped out by a flood several years ago. This week I visited with Putman Bateman (a grandson of William Porter Bateman. He swears to the fact that his father (Hayden Bateman) had worked on the ferrycrossing with William Porter Bateman and my grandad Willis Bateman helped them. Putman said that some of the dock timbers were still sticking out of the water on the north river bank on the west side of hwy 85 where it crosses the Trinity river. He also stated that a landing house or building had stood in the now wooded area north of the docking site. I asked Putman about the flood and he told me the site had undergone a large flood years ago and the buildings destroyed. Others who live in the Styx and Kemp area have told me similar stories concerning this site. Could The Handbook of Texas staff been given incorrect information? I think it is very possible. My granddad William Porter Bateman definately owned hundreds of acres on both sides of the Trinity river and there are still signs of an old wagon road through the wooded area which leads down to the river where the ferry crossing was located. I stood on the hwy 85 bridge this summer and observed several timbers jutting up from the water near the north bank. They did not appear to have grown there. For several years I have heard of people in the area diving near the sunken ferry, removing some of the timber and using it in their homes as the quality of the wood was very desirable. I would appreciate any information and comments on this subject. Please contact me with your thoughts and facts. Thanks! Jerry

I checked the Indexed Athens Review (newspapers) 1900-1950 for all the names mentioned in your query. The only one I found was a reference for J. F. Parker (maybe your John Floyd). Here is what was in the paper. It was a Thursday Edition. May 7, 1925, pg 20 (reference for the printed version of the paper) J. F. Parker, Age 86, died at home of his daughter Mrs. T.L. Bell in the Sand Springs community last night. Death was due to old age. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 at Shelby Chapel, with burial in the Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Services will be conducted by Bro. Young. Besides Mrs. Bell, he is survived by a daughter in California and a son who resides in Fort Worth. Good luck in your research. In the Indexed Athens Review (newspaper) is a reference for a Charles H. Brown. You can decide if it's your man: June 10, 1954, pg 35. (Thursday Edition) BROWN: Marriage of Mrs. Dorothy Horn to A/2C Charles H. Brown at Carswell Air-Force Base, June 4, 1954. Parents of groom: Mr. & Mrs. J.H. Brown of Frankston. Parents of Bride: Mr & Mrs. R.H. Brown of Chickasha, OK. Miss Billie Horn, sister of bride, sang. There is a close up of the bride. I did not find any other references in the index to a Charles H Brown, C H Brown or Walter R Brown or W R Brown. There were no references to Effie Elizabeth McCormick as a Brown or a McCormick.
