The Berry Cemetery is located on a game preserve previously owned by Faye Bateman Magahan (daughter of William Porter Bateman) and willed to the State of Texas. Faye and her husband (Vernon Magahan) are buried in the small cemetery on the property which is located a few yards northwest of the Magahan homeplace. The property is leased to an unknown gentleman who keeps cows there. He has a combination lock on the main gate at the road. Stop anywhere in the Styx community and ask for Margie Godwin. She can give you directions to Berry cemetery and instructions about the lock. Margie Godwin makes arrangements for the upkeep of the cemetery and others in the area. I visited the cemetery this year after a large rain. If you decide to visit, either go when it is very dry or prepare to walk the long road to the site. I would like to mention that William Porter Bateman is my ggrandfather. If you have time during your visit, take a hike through the wooded area just north of the house. You might get lucky and find the old wagon tracks which led to the river and the site where ggrandad Bateman ran a ferry crossing (Porter's Bluff) which would be where hwy 85 crosses the Trinity river. Berry cemetery is located south of the Styx community near the intersecton of hwy 85 and fm road 2613. Good luck with your research. Jerry Bateman ([email protected])

There is a sign on the highway just a short distance east of the Trinity River Bridge. It is on private property and you will need to get permission. You will just need to ask local people directions to do so.

Dear List Members, It is that time of year again when we suddenly will have an influx of new online genealogy enthusiasts with their holiday gift computers that are usually newer and faster than what many of the rest of us have. For a great many of them, it will be their first time online. Some of them will make mistakes and some may (will) unintentionally do things and write things that may be irritating to us and against what we have set up as our list rules. Please take this into consideration in advance and be helpful to them. If things get out of hand, know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problems. Just remember, one of these new members might hold the clue you have been searching for. Let us not discourage them before they have a chance to learn how this works. I would like also to take this time to wish each of you and yours a wonderful and safe Holiday Season. Hi All, Just wanted to do a little bit of bragging about our genealogy society - East Texas Genealogical Society. ETGS represents 6 counties - Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith. We recently were the local hosts for the Texas State Genealogical Society Annual Conference in Tyler. We also participated in their writing contests. Our newsletter was voted 2nd place in the state losing out to Dallas Genealogical Society for 1st. Our newsletter editor Pat Galloway really deserved this award for her hard work in getting out a monthly newsletter on time with a lot of information included. We also won an 2nd place for quarterly - East Texas Family Records. This was done with a lot of hard work from our editior June Everheart and former editior Martha Glover. Also a lot of hard work was put in by our county representatives including Estelle Corder for Anderson & Henderson Counties, Nancy Crain for Gregg County, Geraldine Graves for Panola County, John Dulin for Rusk Co! unty, Mary Love Berryman for Smith County and our newest rep for Anderson County - Mike Vaughn. For Henderson County we published the following articles: School Teacher Vouchers Petitions to Commissioners Court List of Road Workers Settlers - J. C. Dunn Survey Bank of LaRue Investors - 1911 Settlers of B. F. Higgins Survey William Perkins Civil War Letter Perkins Family LaRue Family Bible List of Road Workes - 1871 Request for Road Extension Petition for Election to Determine Whether to Levy Tax Petition for a New Road Request for Road Extension 1935 Athens Citizen Directory We also published an article on the 7th Texas Infantry Buried at Hopkinsville, Kentucky. This included men from McLennan, Freestone, Kaufman, Cherokee, Smith, Rusk, Harrison and Upshur counties. For next year, I do know that Estelle Corder will be continuing the 1935 Athens Citizen Directory information among other things. We always welcome any articles about Henderson County families, genealogy or history. Estelle or June Everheart will be glad to work with you. We are also planning a special meeting at the Palestine Public Library on March 30, 2002 from 2 p.m. to about 4 p.m. We are also co-hosting a free seminar with the Tyler Family History Center on March 23. We will have several speakers on various topics. This will be our 2nd year to do this. We are also going to have Don Raney do a full day seminar on July 13. If you have not heard Don speak, he is an excellent speaker. The cost will most likely be around $25. I am also in the process of getting another special meeting together in Carthage hopefully in August. Still need to confirm this. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Scott Fitzgerald, President of ETGS

Hi Eleonore, I have been working on a full-name index for the East Texas Genealogical Soceity for the first ten years of our quarterlies. Even though I did not find an exact match I thought you might want to see the Frizzell names that we do have. I also want you to realize that ETGS covers six counties (Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk & Smith) so you need to take that in consideration. The Frizzells that I find are as follows: Last Name etc First Name etc - Volume /Issue: Page FRIZZELL BIBLE RECORDS - 11/ 3: 3 FRIZZELL A.
