    1. Looking for W M JONES
    2. Betsy Jones
    3. Good morning, everybody! I've just recently joined this list and spent this morning searching through the archives. Y'all seem like a friendly bunch, so I figured I'd dive in. My Harrison county connection is this: my gggrandmother was from there. I have a copy of her father's obituary (three different ones, actually) and I'm eager to visit Marshall to learn more about them. (I grew up in Florida and only recently moved to the Dallas area, so I was very excited when I realized that Marshall is just a few hours away!) Anyhoo...you guys have already helped some without realizing it -- my obituary states that he is buried in Greenwood, so I'm looking forward to the listings when you complete them, Cathy & David, and also that he was in "Richardson's Volunteers" which is also the second Texas Cavalry if I understood one of your past posts correctly, Jimmy O. Many thanks! The obituary is as follows. I have no record of the newspaper's name or date of publication -- I'm assuming that the year is 1894. Mayor Jones Dead. Hon. W. M. Jones, Mayor of the city of Marshall, died at his residence on North Bolivar street at 8:30 this morning, of congestion of the bowels. The deceased was born in Decatur, Alabama in 1819 and moved to this county in 1843. For a number of years he was a well-to-do farmer and twenty-five years ago, moved to Marshall and opened a general merchandise store. During the war he served gallantly with Richardson's volunteers and in every relation of life, public and private, during fifty-one years residence here, he has proven himself a good citizen, honored and respected by all. He was a man of very decided views, and usually expressed his opinions in unmistakable terms, and however much others might have differed from him, no man has ever said aught against his character. Mr. Jones was a Royal Arch Mason and will be buried with Masonic honors at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at Greenwood Cemetery. All places of business will close from 10 to 11 out of respect to the dead. The city offices are closed and will remain closed until after the funeral of Mayor Jones. (end of obituary) A few more clues -- a briefer obit mentions that he was elected at the last city election, so he was only in for one term. I have an obituary for a son (also at Greenwood) named Johnnie A. Jones (?? - 1873) which mentions sisters, but no names or how many. My gggrandmother (one of those sisters) was Sarah Rebecca Jones (1843-1940) who married James Layne (of Highland county, VA) and they later moved to Manatee county, FL. She died in Jacksonville, Duval county, Florida. I'm looking for additional information on my W M Jones (I'm not even sure what the initials stand for!), his wife, children, etc. etc. If any of this information sounds familiar to you, please drop me at line at mej1@ix.netcom.com Many thanks in advance! Betsy (Veal) Jones (who, ironically enough, married a Jones and moved right back to Texas!) -- Betsy Jones ><> mej1@ix.netcom.com http://www.netcom.com/~merlisk/home.html "The typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, 'What?
