If you will look at an atlas, you will see that the Red River makes up part of the northeast boundary of Texas, extends eastward into Louisiana, then turns south and goes through Louisiana, eventually merging with the Mississippi River above Baton Rouge. Having said that, Nacogdoches for years was known to new settlers as the "gateway to Texas."
