Hi all, The page with the list of cemeteries is up! Thanks to Rusty for creating the list and the directions to each cemetery. You'll find it at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcem.htm Here's hoping that one day, we'll have all the cemeteries retranscribed and online. Now I'm working on the index to Jan Craven's scrapbook of marriages and obits from Marshall area newspapers from 1870 to 1901 (approx.) This should be another interesting day! Make it great! Gail Gail
Jimmy, Could you possibly look up the name Austin CHOATE (may be spelled CHOAT) I am descended through his son Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson married Martha PAUL in Marshall. I believe they were married in the late 1800's I do not have my notes in front of me. I have some information that states that Austin sometimes went by A. CHOAT and that another of his sons, P.H. died on the way home from the civil war. They were in Lane's Rangers. Would appreciate any information you can find. Have also recently found out that another line, that of W.B. COLWELL was in Harrison County in the 1860s. Thank you for anything you find out. There are 25 Rolls of Microfilm at the East Texas Baptist University Library that have the service recors of these Units and some of this information was included. I'm sure ALL men from our County didn't get listed and some listed are from other counties. There are some ages at time of enlistment and some death dates. The book can be ordered from The Harrison County Genealogical Society, Research Library, Old Courthouse, Peter Whetstone Square, Marshall, TX 75670. The cost is $17 plus $3.00 postage and handling for a total of $20. They should be available in the Library with the other books they have for sale. We didn't know what response we would get so only a limited number were printed at first. We will have them reprinted as needed but it could take a couple of weeks if we run out. Last time I looked there were four left. I will be happy to look up an ancester in that book for you just as I do in our other files and E-Mail you the information. I am on our Harrison County Web Page for "Look-ups" and I've done over 100 of them in the past year. We mainly have files on early settlers in our County. I can also check the Cemetery Index as well as our vertical files. If any of you have family history you would like to add to our files we would be glad to have it. Jimmy Oliphant
My great great grandfather was Austin Choate and his son Pleasant were in Lane's Rangers during the civil war. Is this the same outfit as you mention. If so there is a book I have come across that is a journal of sorts written by a soldier in that outfit. Dianna -----Original Message----- From: A.C. I would be much obliged. I have three or four members of W. P. Lane's 1st Texas Cavalry from Harrison County that served in the War of Northern Aggression. One we believe to have perished we have no record of George H. Hill listed as 8 years of age in the Harrison county 1850 census. His parents died in 1851 and we have no record of him in the 1860 or 1870 censuses. We are pretty sure he was off on his own in the 1860 census somewhere but may have perished prior to the 1870 census as he never returned to where all his brothers and sisters were. Thanks. Dear Sue, Could you look in the book you mentioned, below is a snip of the message, and see if you find any reference to CHOAT(E) or COLWELL names. I know that my gg grandfather Austin CHOATE was in Marshall while he and a son served in the civil war. Dianna While at the museum I saw a wonderful book that I thought someone else might get good use of. It was 'Confederate Soldiers That Served In Units Formed In Harrison County, Texas' and was compiled by Patsy and Jimmy Oliphant. It sells for $17.00 with $3.00 postage.
Could you please give me the address of the genealogy museum? My CHOATE line was in Marshall for awhile, and have now just found out that another line was there as well. P. Owen, and I went to the courthouse to see where my grandfather spent most of his early mornings. He and his cronies would gather there and discuss the evenings events and news before he went to his furniture store. There were still old men sitting in front of the courthouse and talking! The museum was wonderful and the ladies who were volunteers at the genealogy library were fantastic. They looked up my family names and offered to do an extensive search for me long distance. They are very dedicated and lovely to work with. I really recommend visiting with them. Kaye Williams (Taylor, Smith, Long)

Sue, I was sent a copy of your letter from the Harrison net page and wondered if I could bother you with a question about the book you mentioned for Harrison co military listings. I have 3 Carrington ancestors who served in Harrison co. They are listed in various books but the TX Archives doesn't seem to be able to find one of them. Their names are CARRINGTON--Perry, Harrison W and JMD. The Harrison one is the mystery and he is my ggggf and the other two are brothers of his. Another brother later moved through Harrison Co but he served in ARK. Would you mind seeing if your book might have something on them? Thanks so much, Darla Bostick

Sue, thank you for letting us know about the book of Civil War soldiers. Wonder if there is a way to learn before buying the book, if our particular ancestor is listed? Thanks for a reply. Norma (Gorman) Wright

Hi: Yes, the museum is located in the old courthouse on the downtown square. They have a sign out about it being the museum or the historical society. Inside they have all kinds of wonderful information. A lot of work has been done in the last several years to get things organized. It has changed and grown a lot in the years I have been going up there. Sure wish we were researching the same families!
