    3. McFarland, Mary Ethel "Mollie", born March 1865, we think in Harrison County. Married John Calvin TUCKER, August 31, 1881 in Gregg County, Texas. John Calvin Tucker was born May 13, 1860 in Arkansas and died July 27, 1892 in or near Harlton, Harrison County, Texas in a logging/railroad accident. The next account we find of his wife and children is 1900 census for Hunt County, Texas. We are at a loss to find any connection to the family in Hunt County. Looking for a reason for a young widow with five children to move that far. Morris Halliburton Bells, Texas

    3. Morris - Your second query confirms it. MY grandmother was Lucy Shaddock, niece or grea-niece of Elizabeth Shaddock McFarland. Their were several Lucy Shaddocks, of which you are probably aware. My Lucy Emmaline was dau of James and Emmaline (SEALES) Shaddock. They both died, 1879 and 1881, Arkansas, and the five children were reared by Richard Ira Shaddock, their uncle, in Harrison County, and his wife, "Aunt Sack" Sarah Koon Shaddock. If interested, let me know. Norma

    3. Dear Morris, I am not a descendant of Dan McFarland. However, I am related distantly, and have done research on the Koon-Shaddock families, and have done a "book" on those families and their relationships. There is a family portrait of, I believe, John Jacob KOON and his mother, wife and children. I believe his wife was Jennie McFarland, dau of Dan? If you are interested in a copy of the family portrait, I can have a color-copy made to send to you, just for the cost involved. Since I have all that on paper, I don't remember specifics off the top of my head. Good luck. Let me know if you are interested. Sincerely, Norma (Gorman) Wright Norma852Wr@aol.com

    3. In case you missed Ann's column yesterday (Sun. Apr. 5), here's a brief summary. An adoptive mother of 2 Korean-born children wrote in to question the family tree assignment her daughter had been given. Even though the daughter was excited about the assignment and eagerly pursuing her family's lineage, the mother was concerned about other adoptees or foster children who might not be so well adjusted and could be embarrassed by such an assignment. This was Ann's reply: "I'm glad you wrote. Your letter gives me an opportunity to speak out about family trees, lineage and other topics that should have no place in our schools. "It is nobody's business whether a child's family came over on a slave ship or the Mayflower. Teachers should not be asking about family background. If I had to draw a picture of my family tree, it would look like a shrub. My parents and grandparents immigrated from Russua and beyond that, I don't have a clue as to my lineage, and I have never given it a moment's thought." If you'd like to reply to this well-respected columnist, you may do so at http://www.creators.com/lifestyle/landers/writelan.asp or write snail mail to Ann Landers, P. O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611-0562. My personal belief is that no child should be forced to undertake an assignment that causes embarrassment, but school-assigned family history projects are an excellent method of teaching children about history from a "real-people" perspective. Such an assignment also provides a real opportunity for a family learning experience. I've written her a snail letter to that effect and thought you might want to do the same. Gail

    3. Hi all, Someone has volunteered to read Greenwood Cemetery, so it looks like the project for Harrison Co. is moving right along. I found this page a little while ago - within the Tombstone Project site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/howto.html has some good suggestions for reading cemeteries. Now that spring has sprung, the weather should be great for cemetery reading. Thanks to Norma, the Old Friendship Cemetery will be online soon. Gail

    3. Old Friendship Cemetery Harrison County, Texas Late January, 1996 Old Friendship Cemetery is located on the Hallsville road, north of Noonday, north of LaGrone's Chapel. It is on private property; but the young man who owns the place was gracious enough to lead my friend and me through his back yard, around a fenced pen, and over the hill where his cattle are pastured. He opened a wire gate, and helped us to enter the overgrown burial ground. No animals have been grazing there, for the protection of the cemetery; and brambles and vicious briars, tall grasses, and creeping underbrush have intertwined, making walking almost impossible. The owner became interested with us, overcoming his natural reluctance to disturb a burial ground; and it was only because of his good help that we were able to find and read several of the stones. Some could only be read by making chalk rubbings. Most of the stones had broken, and a few had been grown over, and were found only by probing the dirt. While I stood imprisoned by briars, the landowner and my lady friend dug the dirt away with their hands, made the sometimes necessary rubbings, and dictated the inscriptions to me when they could read them. It was a real adventure. We were not able to find two stones that are locked too tightly in the brush. The owner's two sons told of seeing them in the past. The ones we were able to read are as follows: Edgar, son of G.E. and E.D. Allen Born Jun_ 28, 1894 Died Nov. 30, 1898 Missourie Page, dau of Albert and Martha Coleman. Born May 11, 1862. Died October 3, 1882. Martha Bell Wife of J.H. Croft Born October 26, 1860. Died Nov. 4, 1888. A foot marker initialed MBC. A double wide marker: Martha M. & Albert W. Coleman 1835-1918 1826-1899 Foot marker initialed AWC. Cast Iron markers, fenced: W.D. Roberts Born April 28, 1840, in Malibou, California. Died November 25, 1866. Bessie E., wife of George J. Roberts. Born February 20, 1822. Died October 29, 1888. These are the only stones we were able to read. There are probably at least two that we were not able to find. 3. Jimmy: Here is something I thought I would share with all the individuals that are interested in W. P. Land - This article comes from Historical Times Illustrated Encyclodedia of the Civil War by Patricia L. Faust Harper Perennial - A division of Harper Collins Publishers - "LANE, WALTER PAYE. CSA b. Cty. Cork, Ireland, 18 Feb 1817. Lane's family immigrated to Baltimore in 1821 but soon relocated to Fariview, Ohio. Lane moved on to Texas in 1836 and fought at San Jacinto in the Texas War for Independence. Thereafter his varried career included privateering in Gulf waters, an attempt at establishing a farm on the frontier, fighting Indians, and teaching school. . . . .This article goes on to say that during the Mexican War he enlisted in the 1st Texas Calvary, a unit heavily engaged in scouting. From 1849 to 1858, when he settled in Marshall, Tex., Lane traveled between Texas, Peru and the Western gold fields, amassing and losing several small fortunes. He entered the confederate service in 1861 as lieutenant colonel in the 3d Texas (Siouth Kansas Texas) Calvary, later becoming colonel of the 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. The 3d Texas first saw action at WILSON'S CREEK, Mo., where Lane had a horse shot under him and fought part of the battle dismounted. Later that yuear he led 5 companies of his Texans in a successful strike against pro-Union Indians at Chustenahlah in Indian Territory. At PEA RIDGEM, Ark., 7-8 Mar 1862, Lane commanded a brigade in Brig. Gen. James M. McIntosh's division. Amid the confusion of that disorganized battle he proved himself capable of handling a larger body of troops, but no promotion was forthcoming. That May the impressive charge he led against a superior force near Corinth, Ms., induced Gen. P.G.T. Beuregard to single him out for special praise in records.. Most of his fighting was done in Texas, and Louisianawhich included the Red River Campaign in the spring of 1864. He was finally advanced to Brig. Generalon 10 Mar 1865, was confirmed in the last session of the Confederate Congress. After the surrender and end of the war Lane returned to Marshall. The amiable bachelor bacame a successful merchant and colorful celebrity in the state, particularly beloved among the Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. In 1887 he published his memoirs "The Adventures and Recollections of Gen. Walter P. Lane" (reprinted in 1928 with an addendum by Mary Jane Lane), of which about one-third covers his Civil War career. He died in Marshall Texas, 28 January 1892. My great aunt had a cousin that she called "Cudin Kiz" who could trace back to Bailey and they always thot that Dicy was the link, but I have not been able to find her in anything that I have found on Bailey. I found a mar. record for a Peter Whetstone and a Dicey Webster in 1814(? can look that up if anyone needs an exact date) in Arkansas Co AR in a DAR magazine. The first children of Peter's and Dicy's (in that first TX census) show that their first children were b. in AR! This is one of my 35 year old puzzles! I would be very interested in any anniversary articles for the unit that might appear in the Marshall newspaper in the late 1800 and early 1900s. I have no record of what my Zachariah Daniel Hill looked like that served in the unit. He may be showen there as he was working for the railroad during that time. Trip

    3. There seems to be some confusion about this one unit - 2nd Texas Cavalry, Company F., W.P. Lane's Rangers, Capt Sam J. Richardson Commander. The Company was formed in Marshall, Texas April 19, 1861. Capt. Sam R. Richardson was elected Captain and the Company was named in honor of Maj. W.P. Lane, a worthy citizen of Marshall who distinguished himself in many hard-fought battles for Texas Independance. This was the Company that W.W. Heartsill was in when he wrote his Journal. Col. W.P. Lane commanded the 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. We do not have a listing for the Companies of the 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. There is a W.P. Lane, Jr. listed in the 2nd Texas Cavalry, Co. F and it is noted that he was transfered to Col W.P. Lane's Regt - his Uncle. I don't mind doing look-ups in our Confederate Soldiers Index, our Cemetery Index, or any of our other files.
