Thanks to several people, including Kimberly and Rusty, Liberty Hill Cemetery is finally online this morning. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/liberty.htm I have the lastest newsletter from the HCGS and will get it online soon! It's RAINY here in East Texas! So a few weeks ago it was too hot to read cemeteries - now it's too WET!! No complaints, though, even though we may be growing web feet soon. Have a great day! Gail
Hi All, I've mentioned this website before, but wanted to share it again, since it's mightily improved now, and we have some new listmembers who may not know about it. Dr. Jere Jackson, Stephen F. Austin State University professor, and his computer class students, have developed a beautiful website and wonderful tribute to the heritage of Harrison County. Please take some time to wander through http://www.cets.sfasu.edu/ , especially the Harrison County section at http://www.cets.sfasu.edu/Harrison/default.html to read about the county and see some terrific - and fast-loading - pictures. You can let Jere know what you think by sending him e-mail at CETS@sfasu.edu . He and the Center are also responsible for the computer, printer, and online hookup at the museum. You can write the folks at the research library direct now, at museum@prysm.net. If you're in the Marshall area this weekend, come to the meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society, at 1:30, in the Research Library at the museum. The speaker will be Shreveport resident, Juanita Cawthon, a Jefferson native, who has published several genealogical and historical books. She'll present a program on "Preparing Your family Health Tree". BTW, welcome to those folks who've subscribed in the last few days! Please share your lines with us, and maybe someone will be able to help. If you want to see what you may have missed, you can search the Rootsweb archives at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Happy hunting, Gail

Hi All, The GenConnect upgrade occurred over the weekend, and I hope you will go take a look at the Query Forum at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Harrison By clicking on "Surname List", you can see an alphabetical listing of the surnames entered in the Harrison County Query Forum. Clicking on a particular surname will show you the message. With the "Search/Personalize Your Display" function, you can display messages within the last year/6 months/month, and search by keywords or by the poster. Choosing the "Surname Helper Search" gives you even more options for surname searching. A new box has been added to "Post a New Message" - a "Subject" field. This could be the surname/s you're researching (be sure to put them in the "Surname" box, too.), a place name you're interested in, a particular record you need (like a marriage certificate), or anything that might make your query stand out. If you have already posted a query there, it's OK, and wasn't changed a bit by the upgrade. If you haven't posted a query there, please do. The Obits and Bios boards are a little different from the Query Forum, but sometimes people get them confused. Remember that a query is a question and seeks information, while an obituary - usually taken from a newspaper - offers information about a person who has died. A bio(graphy) also offers information about a person, either living or dead, but will not ask for more information. If you have any collected obituaries, feel free to post them at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/HarrisonObits If you have a short biography of someone in your family, you may post it at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/HarrisonBios . Be sure you have the copyright holder's permission, or just post an abstract. If you have any questions about copyright, let me know, or, better yet, see this page http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html. Happy Hunting, Gail
Hi, this is Gail, your listowner here - I don't usually pass on queries from other sources, but this one caught my eye, and I'm hoping someone on the list might be able to help. If you know this WILLIAMSON family, please let me know, and I'll put you in contact with the writer. I did not include the writer's address. I will try to contact her this weekend for more details. Please don't forward this to other lists without quoting the message and source exactly. >From the 3 Sept., 1998, Marshall News Messenger "Our Readers Write" column: Elizabeth Williamson Nance writes: "I am trying to find the descendants of Arthur J. Williamson, born Aug. 5, 1880, and wife Mabel, born Oct. 14, 1886. "The reason I need this information is because my son was born without an immune system and I am trying find out what side of the family had the same systems. The doctor that gives my son his infusions asked me if it was hereditary. I have no idea. That's why I am trying to find this information. "Your help would be greatly appreciated."
-----Original Message----- From: Constance Diamond [SMTP:p2241@harborside.com] Sent: Thursday, September 03, 1998 10:59 AM To: ALEXANDER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ALEXANDER-L] IMPORTANT NOTICE - GenConnect Upgrade MESSAGE FROM ROOTSWEB: We're preparing for the latest upgrade to the GenConnect System. There's a few things you need to know about this upgrade ..... The entire GenConnect system will be upgraded starting at midnight on Saturday September 5, 1998. This will require that we shut the system down. The reason is twofold ..... it's not just a patch .... it's a re-write of the program that runs the system. Also, the Global Search engine has been revamped and mega-enhanced, which will require a total rebuild. No new postings can be allowed during this rebuilding period. Downtime is estimated to be 8 hours max (yep .... it's a huge system now!). Anyone attempting to use the system during this downtime will be given notice that it's being upgraded .... no-one will be left in the dark. However, you could help us make this a smoother transition if you would spread the word on any and all of the major mailing lists that you may be subbed to (ROOTS-l, xxROOTS-L, your county lists, surname lists, etc.). Will you help us by doing this? Below are some of the new features that the latest version (1.10) will contain. Please feel free to include those items listed as 'Visitor Toys' in any announcement you make. This is the most exciting version of genbbs yet, and we're thrilled to be bringing it into production. I encourage anyone with questions about the conversion to sub to the GenConnect-L list, if you're not already. Simply send an email to GenConnect-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe in both the subject and as the only word in the body. Turn off all signature files, please. Once again .....the upgrade will begin at midnight on Saturday, Sep 5, and should take no more than 8 hours. Please help us announce this. There will be no official notice once the conversion is completed. The new version will be in effect for all to see, and will serve as notice. This is just the latest improvement, and we've all anxiously awaited this moment. Happy Hunting!!!! The GenConnect Team ..... Randy, Pam and Nancy List of new GenConnect Features: Visitor Toys: ------------------- Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter) Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered 'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option) Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and hotlinked to the query in which it appears. Cookie support expanded to include "date ranges". Faster, sleeker search engine. Multiple-word surnames supported - including the capability of searching for them. New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching. ==== ALEXANDER Mailing List ==== Search the ALEXANDER archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl

Well, there's good news and there's bad news - Bad news first - The Gen-Connect Query System http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/index.html will be down from midnight, Saturday, September 5, 1998, for about 8 hours. Good news - The whole system is being upgraded, not just a patch, but a re-write of the program that runs the system. It will be bigger and better than ever and will include these Visitor Toys: ------------------- Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter) Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered 'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option) Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and hotlinked to the query in which it appears. New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching. ---------- Anyone who tries the system during the down time will get a message that the system is being upgraded. Hopefully not too many people will try this in the wee, small hours of the morning! They've been working on the changes for several months, so it should be terrific! And don't worry - any queries you've already entered will still be there. If you haven't posted a query yet, be sure to do so, at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Harrison Gail
Hi All, Everyone may know this except me, but I just discovered this terrific place locator http://www.expediamaps.com/ Go to "Place Finder" and type in the place you want to see. Marshall is here http://www.expediamaps.com/results.asp?Place=Marshall%2C+TX Have fun, Gail
Greetings all, This is my first post here. I'm descended from Nathan SMITH, b abt 1790 in VA, died abt 1863 in Marshall, Texas. His son Gideon Sr, was my gggrandfather (and I have information about him and his descendents). Nathan's wife was Francis (?). Nat was a politician, Vice President of the American ("Know-Nothing") Party in Texas. He was wealthy and had a plantation in Woodlawn, TX, just north of Marshall. Help!! Kimberly has been so nice to look up a few Wilson's in Texas on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses and a couple of them that are very curious and close to what I am looking for are in 1860 and 1870 Davis County. I looked on my 1840 through 1860 maps and couldn't find a Davis County anywhere. Can someone help me out here - in what present day county did Davis County belong? Trip Wilson
Hi Trip and all, Curiousity got the best of me, so I went to TXGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/ and found in the County Index under the "Ds", that Davis County was renamed Cass County http://www.rootsweb.com/~txcass/ in 1871. You can see from the Northeastern county map at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/map/neast.htm that Cass is just the other side of Marion County from Harrison. Thanks for that work Gail: I am really only interested in checking out the ones that could be the Joseph Wilson I mentioned earlier and particularly in the 1860 and 1870 censuses since that would show my Henry C. Wilson as 7 in 1860 and 17 in 1870. Thanks again. Hi..JDR You said: the museum located in the old court house in Marshall has a world of info Thanks...I will check this out.. I really need to take a trip to Marshall. Carole Alamokin@aol.com
Hi Gail and all. I have had several of you fine folks contact me wanting copies of pages of the scrap book. I can tell from the message in the request that you are under the impression that the article is about your ancestor or kinfolk when in fact they are only mentioned in the article. Please be aware that just because their name is in the index, they are not the feature figure of the article. Don't want anyone to be disappointed! ;o) Jan
Jan and all, Good point! >I have had several of you fine folks contact me wanting copies of >pages of the scrap book. I can tell from the message in the request >that you are under the impression that the article is about your ancestor >or kinfolk when in fact they are only mentioned in the article. >Please be aware that just because their name is in the index, they are not >the feature figure of the article. In case you're new to the list or have missed this addition to the website, Jan's talking about the scrapbook that her ggaunts put together between the years 1870 and 1901. If you think your ancestors might have married or died (or even just mentioned) during this time period, check out http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/scrapbook.htm to see the online index. If you see the name of an ancestor, write either Jan or me, and we can share the article with you. If it's short, I can just type it back to you - if it's longer, we can snail a copy to you. Jan, I'll add a line to the explanation on the site ASAP to make this more clear. Now that temps are a little cooler and Texas has had some RAIN, we may all be in better spirits and ready to get back to ancestor searching. Thanks, Gail
We have 64 list members now, including a few new ones in the last couple of weeks. Please feel free to post your lines and any questions you have. I've just changed the list's "replyability" function to "reply to sender", instead of "reply to list". If your reply to someone's question is of general interest, please select "reply to all", so that all listmembers can read it. Any personal messages should be sent to the sender only. GenConnect Query Forum had some problems yesterday, but I think all is OK this morning. If you haven't posted a query at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Harrison please do. I have it set to show queries just for the last month, but you can go to the "Search/Personalize your display" and configure it however you want - to see messages for a year, only certain surnames, or only by certain people. Plus you can go to the global search engine to see queries for your surnames in lots of other places. If you have any questions about how it works, let me know. As always Happy Hunting, Gail
