I'm late with this announcement, but if any of you are in the Marshall area, come on in to the museum tomorrow at 1:30 pm for the monthly meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society. The speaker is Reed Matthews, of Shreveport, who will talk about Genealogy on the Internet. This should be good! I'll try to give you a summary of his talk, especially if he has any new, good links to share. Gail

Hi Gail - It was a great suggestion to tell all members what we are searching for in Harrison. Here is my story: Edward Davis was b1849 in Alabama. He m1871 to Julia Browning b1851 also in AL. They moved to Hallsville ca1872. About the same time, her brother Enoch Browning b1849 in AL also moved there and married Mary Jones b1849 GA, who had a child from a previous marriage. All are on the 1880 census in Harrison. These are my ggparents. I am looking for any of their relatives that might provide a clue to Edward Davis parents. Edward and dau Addie Frances Riley Bullock b1879 in Smyrna are buried in Forrest Hills Cemetery. Kimberly Parks and Ann Davis have been very helpful so far. Thanks to all. Adrian Davis Moorpark, CA
Hi all, I just had an excellent suggestion from one of our listmembers, and hope that everyone will join in and share. It's been a while since we've had a roll call, so maybe now's a good time to do it. So ... please share your Harrison Co. ancestors, where they lived, when they lived, who they married. We're still a small list, so size is not a big problem, but, please, no gedcoms or unreasonably long posts. It would be a good idea to do this every couple of months or so. BTW, all mail lists are archived at Rootsweb. Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and put in the name of the list you want to search. Guess I should kick this thing off, but I'm such a newcomer here - only the last 31 years. My husband's family has been here only since the 1930s, but his line includes BROWN,1810 to present, England to MD to VA to Hopkins/Upshur Co. TX, to Harrison Co. TX Collateral lines, not necessarily in Harrison Co., are COPPEDGE and ARMSTRONG. Gail
Is there an old cemetery in Waskom, Texas. We had a relative brought on a train from Bee Co, Texas to Waskom for burial, in 1910. His name was Thomas Jeptha Gibson, his wife's name was Margaret, some of their children lived in Panola, Harrison Co. and related family in Rusk Co, Texas. Thanks for any help, Milton Gibson
Welcome to the list, Betsy! This IS a friendly bunch, made up of very helpful people, when they know something. Let 's hope that someone knows about your W. M. Jones. Thanks, too, for posting the obit - it would make a wonderful addition to the Harrison County Obits at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/HarrisonObits I hope you've checked the queries, too - lots of Joneses in Harrison County! Query Forum is http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Harrison and old queries are http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcquery.htm Anyone can search archives of any mail lists at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Good luck to you in your search! Good morning, everybody! I've just recently joined this list and spent this morning searching through the archives. Y'all seem like a friendly bunch, so I figured I'd dive in. My Harrison county connection is this: my gggrandmother was from there. I have a copy of her father's obituary (three different ones, actually) and I'm eager to visit Marshall to learn more about them. (I grew up in Florida and only recently moved to the Dallas area, so I was very excited when I realized that Marshall is just a few hours away!) Anyhoo...you guys have already helped some without realizing it -- my obituary states that he is buried in Greenwood, so I'm looking forward to the listings when you complete them, Cathy & David, and also that he was in "Richardson's Volunteers" which is also the second Texas Cavalry if I understood one of your past posts correctly, Jimmy O. Many thanks! The obituary is as follows. I have no record of the newspaper's name or date of publication -- I'm assuming that the year is 1894. Mayor Jones Dead. Hon. W. M. Jones, Mayor of the city of Marshall, died at his residence on North Bolivar street at 8:30 this morning, of congestion of the bowels. The deceased was born in Decatur, Alabama in 1819 and moved to this county in 1843. For a number of years he was a well-to-do farmer and twenty-five years ago, moved to Marshall and opened a general merchandise store. During the war he served gallantly with Richardson's volunteers and in every relation of life, public and private, during fifty-one years residence here, he has proven himself a good citizen, honored and respected by all. He was a man of very decided views, and usually expressed his opinions in unmistakable terms, and however much others might have differed from him, no man has ever said aught against his character. Mr. Jones was a Royal Arch Mason and will be buried with Masonic honors at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at Greenwood Cemetery. All places of business will close from 10 to 11 out of respect to the dead. The city offices are closed and will remain closed until after the funeral of Mayor Jones. (end of obituary) A few more clues -- a briefer obit mentions that he was elected at the last city election, so he was only in for one term. I have an obituary for a son (also at Greenwood) named Johnnie A. Jones (?? - 1873) which mentions sisters, but no names or how many. My gggrandmother (one of those sisters) was Sarah Rebecca Jones (1843-1940) who married James Layne (of Highland county, VA) and they later moved to Manatee county, FL. She died in Jacksonville, Duval county, Florida. I'm looking for additional information on my W M Jones (I'm not even sure what the initials stand for!), his wife, children, etc. etc. If any of this information sounds familiar to you, please drop me at line at mej1@ix.netcom.com Many thanks in advance!
