Hi, If you're going to be out of town during the holidays, please remember to unsub from any mail lists and then resub when you return. It's not necessary, or advised, to let the list know of any travel plans. When you return, you can check the list archives to see what you missed http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Likewise, if you change servers, please unsub your old e-mail address and then resub the new one. I've been getting some bounces lately from some listmembers who have not done that. As always, if you have any problems related to the mail lists, please let me know. Happy Holidays to all, Gail gailwbrown@bigfoot.com
It's been quiet lately - guess everyone is busy with holiday preparations. Anyone with an interest in Confederate Research might be interested in this - One of the formost research centers for the Conferacy in the country is located on the campus of Hill County Junior College. They have a web site at: http://www.texashf.org/publications/sum96/scrapbook9607.html The center is currently closed for remodeling, but the Confederate records have been sent to the Dallas Public Library http://www.lib.ci.dallas.tx.us/home.htm Gail Harrison County mail listowner http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/harrison.htm

If you would like to get some good, healthy exercise and you either live in Harrison County or can get there, why not update a cemetery listing for the Harrison County webpage? Currently, the following cemetery listings are available, just waiting for someone to update them: Blocker Champion Concord Elysian Fields Hightower Marshall City Nesbitt Scottsville Woodlawn Yates Memorial If you would be willing to undertake updating one of these cemetery listings, please email me and I will tell you where and how to print out a listing that you can take to the cemetery and update. It is great exercise, and a real help to those searching for ancestors in the Harrison County area who cannot get there. So, if you have found records on the internet that were helpful to you and you can take on a cemetery, you will be repaying what you gained. What goes around comes around! Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help out! Bruce C. Cook AKA "Rusty" bccook@nh.ultranet.com
John - I've been very busy with a new job this summer, so haven't had much chance to work on the cemetery project. Just wondered where you stood? When you have a chance, why don't you go ahead and send me whatever you have on Piney Cemetery, even if it is now complete. Send it however is easiest for you.... email, snailmail, whatever. Cathy - I haven't had much time to work on the Harrison Co cemetery project in the past couple of months. Just trying to get caught up with where we stand at the moment. How are you coming with Greenwood Cemetery? Any help I can give you? Look forward to hearing from you when you have a moment. ReneƩ, COPPEDGE is one of my husband's lines, but nothing in what I have mentions your Thomas Oliver. I can tell you that this family (my husband's, anyway) came from England to Tidewater Virginia/Maryland 17th century, to Tennessee , to Upshur Co. Texas 1850s. I have a couple of Coppedge contacts - if you're interested, let me know by private e-mail. Also, please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/harrison.htm and post a query at the Query Forum link. You can also do a global search for the name there and perhaps find other people researching the same name. News from the Harrison County Genealogical Society - I went to the meeting yesterday, to hear the talk by Reed Matthews, President of the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association. He drew a laugh or two, when he talked about this "hobby" we have, and its inherent curiosity. We bother people we don't know, we visit people we don't know, we travel all across the country (maybe around the world), and some of us send a lot of e-mail to people we don't know. We walk the stacks in libraries, hoping to find just the book that has ALL our family in it! Reed also talked a lot about how far this medium has come, since it all broke loose in 95-96, and how the Internet makes the world smaller. And there's a new book available from the museum - Jimmy and Patsy Oliphant's new _Harrison County Consolidated Roll of Scholastic Census - 1912_, $22.00. For more information go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcgensoc.htm And I finally uploaded selected articles from the September issue of the HCGS newsletter. As usual, there is a lot of terrific information, and you just might find the names of some of your ancestors there. One of our list members submitted an article about her Gorman family reunion; there's a narrative about the trip that Kimberly and Ruth Briggs took this summer, through 5 states in 6 days; and I wrote a piece on the new computer in the museum. Edna Sorber is the editor, and she welcomes any articles dealing with Harrison County history or genealogy. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcgs4.htm Of course, the best thing is to join the Genealogical Society, so you can have your own complete newsletter, mailed to your house. It's good to see some action on the list, and I hope you've found some connections with the names that have been posted lately. Remember that this list, as all lists at Rootsweb, are archived and searchable. Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Have a good week! Gail
Gail, I am not sure if I am sending this to you or everyone, but here goes. My surnames for Harrison Co. are: Van Wert, Hanks, Strength, Uden, Crouse and Jordan. On my wife's side: Starr, Hart and Hughes. My great grandfather Van Wert came to Harrison Co after the civil war from Louisiana where he married a Heath. Before that he was in S.Car. and was born in N.Y. My Hanks line came from N. Car. and married an Uden. I think Jordan who married a Hanks(my grandfathers sister) may have also come from N. Car. but not at all sure. My maternal grandmother was an Uden. I believe the Uden's came from Germany to Harrison Co. around the 1850's. My grandfather(Van Wert) was born in Marshall and married a Strength. The Strength's came from Little Rock around the 1870's or 1880's and before that were from Georgia. The Starr's moved to Marshall from Nacogdoches in the 1870's. My wife's grandmother married a Hart who was from Marshall but I don't know when the Hart's first arrived or from where they came. My wife's mother married a Hughes who was from Marion Co. A lot of open ended info. If anyone has anything to help tie it down I would appreciate the help. Jerry Van Wert

Gang: Just curious - I had many deaths occurring between 1860 and 1865 in the Powelltown/Jonesville/Concord area for my family. Most were women and young children. Was there any particular epidemic that anyone is aware of in Harrison County during that time period? Trip
