THE VERNON (TX) TIMES NEWSPAPER - (Thursday, Nov. 18, 1944) FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT PLAINVIEW... O. S. (Oscar) SLOAN, a former resident of this county and well known to a number of residents in the Doans and Fargo Communities died suddenly of a heart attack in Plainview at his home last week. Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church in that city with REV. AARON SHAW and REV. L.B. REAVES, Baptist Ministers officiating. Interment was made at the Plainview Cemetery. A clipping from a Plainview newspaper, mailed to the Vernon Times for publication by his wife, the former MISS NELL MILLER, a native of this county, gives the following information regarding the death of her husband: "O. S. SLOAN, a resident here the past six years, died of a heart attack late Friday afternoon. He was stricken while sitting in his car at the city auditorium where he was employed as caretaker. A passerby noticed that he was ill and an ambulance was summoned. He died a few minutes after reaching the hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1885, at Cumby in Hopkins County, SLOAN moved with his parents to the Indian territory in Oklahoma when he was a year old. Later he moved from Oklahoma to Vernon where on Oct. 5, 1907, he was married to MISS CLARA NELL MILLER, who is among survivors. In 1917 the family moved from Vernon to Amarillo where SLOAN was employed in the Santa Fe railway shops for three years. He then engaged in the real estate business with L.S. GILL (and) for a time was in 1923 joined the Amarillo Police force. In 1925 he became deputy sheriff under WYLIE POLLARD and in 1927 the family moved to Eakly, OK, where SLOAN farmed. In 1938 the family moved to PLAINVIEW. SLOAN was a member of the Baptist Church. Besides his wife, two daughters; MISSES IMOGENE and EVELYN SLOAN, both of Plainview, survive. Also surviving are a brother JOHN SLOAN, Glendale, CA; two sisters; MRS. J.F. GARRETT, Wichita Falls, and MRS. JAMES W. PATTERSON, Ft. Sumner, NM, several step brothers and half-brothers and half sisters survive." Hope this helps someone find their ancestors. I apologize if this post intrudes, it just had so many names and locations, I thought someone might be able to use it. Marguerite Prince Songy

Thought you would like to know that GenConnect will be taken offline sometime during the evening of Saturday, Jan 16 or early morning hours of Jan 17, 1999 in order to move to a bigger, faster server. Hopefully they won't be offline for too long. An announcement will not be made when we come back online. Dear Harrison County Researchers, Just need to clarify my previous query. I have an two old obituaries one from 1888 and the other from 1897 that came from a scrapbook and I need to find out what newspaper they came from. I looked for them at the Marshall Library last fall and they did not have them on microfilm then I sent them to the current newspaper in Marshall, Texas called the Marshall News and they could not find them in their old papers. I also had someone check the East Texas Baptist University and they could not find them in their microfilm copies. I may be looking in the wrong paper. Do any of our Harrison County Experts know what the names of the newspapers were during that time and where to find copies? I am trying to use the obituaries as source documentation and the they must show the newspaper name and circulation date. The information cannot be handwritten. That is why I am trying to find them on microfilm somewhere so I can have a copy made. Any help is greatly appreciated. -- Jackson
Hi Harrison County Researchers, Need your help in documenting two obituaries I have from the late 1800s. Does anyone know where I can find copies of and old Harrison County newspaper that was called the Marshall Messenger? The specific years I need are 1888 and 1896-97. Tried the East Texas Baptist University but they did not have those years. Any other ideas? Does anyone know what years it was in circulation? Thanks, Jackson
I am researching the family of Henry Meriwether Hood and other related families. Henry M. Hood was in Harrison County by 1850 coming from Lowndes Co. AL. By 1860 he had moved on to Washington County, Tx. where he died in 1865. Some of his children did not move on to Washington County with him. His son-in-law Absolum Benjamin Stone came with him and then moved on to Austin County, Tx. The Motley family is connected to both the Hood and the Stone Family. If anyone is doing research on Henry M. Hood I would particularly like to hear from them. I am also very interested in the Stones and the Motleys. Thank you. Beth Meriwether Fort Worth
I have been tracking the Carringtons of Harrison Co and have come to a roadblock on military records. At Univ of North Texas in Denton I found record of service for the following. The State Archives wrote me saying they could not find any record. Any clues? Does anyone own or have access to the microfilm mentioned at the bottom and see if there's anything? Two new cemetery listings are now available at the Harrison County TXGenWeb site - County Line Baptist http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/county.htm and New Prospect http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/newprospect.htm , an African-American cemetery also known as Smyrna. Scottsville Cemetery is coming soon - http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/scottsville.htm - the picture of the chapel, contributed by Anita Handley, is there now. Other cemeteries are being updated, and if you'd like to help, please contact Rusty Cook at bccook@nh.ultranet.com , or me. Happy Holidays, Gail
Hi List, This query was posted today at the Harrison County site. I'm posting it to the list, just in case you might have an ancestor who was with the Lancers. She will be listed as a lookup volunteer at the website, too. If you're interested in obtaining a copy of her book, call University of Arkansas Press at 1-800-626-0090. I don't usually post notices of a commercial nature but thought someone might benefit from this information. Gail NAME: Jane Johansson EMAIL: johan@viagrafix.net SURNAMES: BROWN DATE: Dec 09 1998 QRYTEXT: A number of men from Harrison County served in Company F (the Harrison County Lancers) of the 28th Texas Cavalry. Company F was organized in the spring of 1862 and was first commanded by Captain Phil BROWN. The 28th Texas served in Arkansas and Louisiana from 1862-1865. For further information, see my book entitled Peculiar Honor: A History of the 28th Texas Cavalry, 1862-1865. This book was published in 1998 by the University of Arkansas Press. I am still looking for wartime photographs, letters, and diaries of men who served in the 28th Texas Cavalry. Please e-mail me if you have any of these documents or if you have queries.
